First off, I hope this is not a repost. I did some searching and found nothing.
I have a 2000 Accord EX V6 with the J30A1. The engine is fine and dandy, but the tranny is a bit funky. Second gear is a bit weird at times. As we all know, the tranny seems to be the achilies heel of this combo.
So, for sake of seeking a better tranny, I have been looking into the 7th gen v6 automatics. It is much cheaper to buy a J30A4 or J30A5 with the tranny than to get the transmission alone for the 6th gen. If I am going to replace the tranny, why not the engine as well?
After some searching around, I found that the local junkyards are well stocked with the new engines pulled from wrecks. The average price for the combo (engine, tranny, ecu, wiring...)has been $800 sans-shipping. One yard remarked that there is little demand for these engines due to their reliability. The individual on the phone was already well-aware of the reliability issues of the 6th gen tranny, but knew nothing about the swap.
In the end, I'd have an extra 40 hp, a little bit better economy, an extra forward gear, and no worries about a glass tranny.
So, the big question:
The swap, is it possible, has it been done? I am capable of fixing just about anything on a car with exceptions of AC systems, tire replacements, and alignments.
Can I make this accord more reliable than my Audi A4?
NOTE: this is the 4th automatic tranny in the Accord. By 5000 miles, the first three were history.
