Here's the car:

1998 Honda Accord EX with the V-6 engine.

How do I get the Maintenance Required light on the instrument panel to turn off? I'm a stickler for regular maintenance and I hate that red light glaring at me when I'm babying the car to death. Thanks!

Since the '04 I have now is my first Honda I don't have the knowledge to answer you. If you have the owner's manual I'll bet it's in there. If not your local dealer would be the way to go. A phone call will do the trick.

1- turn the key to off
2- push in your trip odometer button and hold
3-turn the key to on
4- wait about 10 seconds and it will shut off completely
5- GOOD TO GO!

Did Poffs suggestion work for your red light on problem.
If it did let us all know so we can do the same thing, I haven't had the light ever yet but if I get it Id like to know if that worked..

It does work on the 03/04 Accords, I've reset mine that way. I just wasn't sure if the older models used the same procedure.

Yes, it worked. However, I have to do it each time after the car has been stopped and restarted. The light returns each time, but will go away by following the procedure listed above until you shut the engine off. On my '98, it will return once you restart the engine.

Remember, this is the "maintenance required" light, not the check engine light. Two very different things. My light is Honda saying "come in for your $600 oil change and new air filter" one! ;)

UPDATE!

After filling up with gas this morning, I did the procedure again as set out above. Now the light has stop coming back on after stopping then restarting the engine. Don't ask me why, but it is working now.

Glad to be rid of that sucker glaring at me! Thanks to everyone for the assistance and help.

Your MRL (depending on year and engine) will come on every 7500 miles for older 4 cylinder and all 6 cylinder cars. New 03 and up 4 cylinders are on 10K intervals.

The directions posted are accurate; however, make sure you headlights are not on. It will not reset if you wait for the lights to turn off themselves. You know to what I refer. Make sure they switch is OFF.

Had you looked in the manual you would have known. Did you not have the really cool feeling of excitement when you got it. Were you not so excited that you read the whole manual? Maybe I am hte only loser who did that. Alll Point and laugh. LOL

When I got my 2004 EX, I read the manual front to back and STILL missed the engine maint. reset procedure. DOH!

I know this is an old thread, but you guys are awesome!! I was about to go to a shop and pay $85 for that same solution. All I had was low tranney fluid. I filled it and was stuck with the irritating light.
Thanks so much guys.:D

I have a 2000 Honda Accord EX and the button reset DOES work.
No reason to have the mechanic charge you about $100 to say you need an oil change.

Thanks from NY
