View Full Version : Transmission cooler
6genex 10-03-2007, 01:45 AM hey I've been seeing some stuff on the posts about a transmission cooler and i was wondering where i would get one, how much and if it would be something fairly simple to install. i have a 6th gen and the A/T trannys are notorious for being crap. i burned through one in a little over 100,000 miles, i was wondering if installing one of these would save my transmission some lifespan? and if it is something that's easy to do instructions would be greatly appreciated
falkore24 10-03-2007, 08:18 AM Here's everything that you need.

ckebottle 10-03-2007, 12:57 PM Is it necessary to take the front bumper off or can the battery tray be removed and go that route? Great link though!
falkore24 10-03-2007, 12:58 PM The front bumper is easier to remove and takes about 10-15 minutes. I haven't done this yet, but plan to in the near future.
ckebottle 10-03-2007, 01:13 PM But it can be done through the batter tray? I don't really want to mess with my front bumper =/. Is the process pretty much the same for an i4?
falkore24 10-03-2007, 01:21 PM I'd expect that it would basically be identical except that you have more room to work. You might be able to get away with leaving the bumper on and still working from below. Again, I haven't done it yet.
ckebottle 10-03-2007, 03:23 PM Is it the same tranny cooler as it is in the v6 for th i4?
falkore24 10-03-2007, 03:26 PM any would work. the write-ups are for the V6 since it's tranny is more prone to failure. I'd use the same one .... maybe a size larger if you think it could fit since the 4 has to rev higher at the same speed.
ckebottle 10-03-2007, 10:07 PM Cool. I'm defintely going to look into this. I changed my tranny fluid today (12,000 miles about since last one) and it looked alright. I'm very concerned about the tranny since mine went out at around 93k miles =/. When I was doing my fluid change it looked to me like in the i4 the two lines are very very accessible. Can anyone verify this? I'll have to get a pic to verify if those are the two. Doesn't even look like the battery and the battery holder would need to be removed.
Is hayden the cooler of choice? When I was at autozone bringing my used tranny oil they had a "air compressor" (i think that was the name) brand for 60 bucks which would need to be special ordered.

falkore24 10-05-2007, 09:31 AM Hey Velo .... is it the Hayden 403? If so and 6genex passes, I'll take it.
6genex 10-05-2007, 04:43 PM if it is the 403 then i think i'll nab it, i have the 4cyl and it looks fairly easy to get to but i think i may still have to remove the front bumper despite not wanting to

34.02 on amazon with free super save shipping ftw.
to 6genex and falkore24: if you guys do it would you take some picture for me or do a diy on it? I hear you 6genex on the front bumper...that thing, at least to me, is a**Witch** to take off.

Hey Velo .... is it the Hayden 403? If so and 6genex passes, I'll take it.
ill have to check. ill have to go to my parents house to see it.
falkore24 10-08-2007, 11:22 AM cke .... your link is missing some info in the website part, so it doesn't work.
6gen: If I can get my gf to watch and document the install, I will post the pics, but I won't touch my camera while dirty.
ckebottle 10-08-2007, 11:36 AM Sorry. No idea how the link got messed up. Maybe when I get edited? Here it is in full...I even double checked it:
http://www.amazon.com/Hayden-Inc-403-Transmission-Cooler/dp/B000C39C9A/ref=sr_1_2/002-7788767-0347211?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1191861390&sr=8-2
falkore24 10-08-2007, 12:36 PM Cool .... thanks! I need to get off of my lazy @$s and do this install already while I don't have any problems.
ckebottle 10-08-2007, 01:41 PM Yes, yes you do! Haha. Pretty good price on amazon. When I went to autozone and asked for a price i was quoted 59.99 and 69.99 and it was not a hayden.
Defintely get your gf to document the diy. Tell her you will break up with her if she doesn't ;) lol jkjk
falkore24 10-08-2007, 01:46 PM LOL .... I may also pay for the install ...... might be able to document anyway. Time is very tight for me lately.
6genex 10-08-2007, 11:16 PM falk did you buy velocifero's hayden? oh and step by step pics on this one would be awsome, seems like a lot of people are interested
ckebottle 10-09-2007, 12:14 AM Just ordered mine on amazon w/ the free super saver shipping ftw! Maybe i'll beat falk to it;)
I'll probably need help myself so I hope someone here can help me if I take pictures and point me in the right direction.
falkore24 10-09-2007, 09:14 AM I haven't bought Velo's yet .... he said that he has to go to look at it to verify the model. Cke may very well beat me to it. I've been putting in rediculous hours during the week, live in NJ and work in NYC (1.5 hr commute each way) and have been out of town every weekend lately (everyone I know decided to get married in the last 2 months!!!). Also, with all of these weddings, I'm broke! Add the open water scuba lessons that start today (& the $450 worth of gear that I need for it) and I tink you can understand why I haven't done this yet. Then theres also all of the crap that I'm getting in order for my LLC (a whole other story).
Cke, I'd be happy to help guide you with your install, but I doubt that you'll have any problems because it looks really easy to do. The link that I posted at the beginning of this thread has a lot of good pics and directions.
ckebottle 10-09-2007, 05:40 PM The diagram " Below is a pic I found for the installation of stock tranny cooler kit for Honda Odyssey. I think that the engine and tranny orientation for Accord (http://www.v6performance.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1248&highlight=accord+tranny+cool er#) V6 and Odyssey (V6 also) is the same. Could you please verify that this is correct?"
I have i4, but as you said it's very similar. I think the most difficult thing will be figuring out which hose is which, and pulling the bumper if i need too. I've never really completely removed the bumper. Just a side of it. When removing it completely does the splash guard need to go?
Velocifero 10-09-2007, 08:52 PM feast your eyes on this baby! comes with everything you see here.

ckebottle 10-09-2007, 09:18 PM Dang it only comes with 1 hose? I thought 2 were needed. Sigh...
Velocifero 10-09-2007, 10:11 PM i dunno how much you need, maybe you can cut it. the hose is just a rubber hose you could get at any auto parts store for cheap.
6genex 10-10-2007, 12:32 AM 2 things 1. will the 404 fit on the accord? and 2. did any of the clips / ties come with the cooler? well actually 3. Cke, when you do your install please document it with pictures, it would be most helpful

it didnt come with any of that. the cooler is a universal part pretty much. it goes behind the radiator i think. you just have to find a way to secure it , with zip ties or whatever. shouldnt be hard at all.
bssmagik83 10-10-2007, 11:05 AM Theres already a write-up for this on V6P.
http://www.v6performance.net/forums/showthread.php?t=86923&highlight=transmission+cool er
falkore24 10-10-2007, 11:18 AM Velo ..... I'm sure it can fit sideways, but for ease of installation, I think I'm going to go with the 403. The 404 is 3" longer, and based on this pic, it doesn't look like it can fit per the DIY. I'd love to help you unloading it, but I'm not going to make this harder on myself. Sorry!

falkore24 10-10-2007, 11:21 AM Sorry guys. I realized that I posteed the link to the real link previously. These are the directions for the Hayden 403.

Velocifero 10-10-2007, 05:04 PM the bigger it is, the cooler it will keep the fluid. do what you gotta do though i didnt know who wanted it actually.
falkore24 10-10-2007, 05:58 PM agreed with regard to performance, but I'm also concerned about ease of installation.

aw waaaa! theres plenty room there Betsy.
falkore24 10-11-2007, 09:57 AM For that matter, there's more than enough cooling from the smaller unit considering that there isn't one stock ..... and how would you know for sure? You didn't install it and have a smaller engine.
..... and it's Betty to you!!! LOL

fine Betty. small but more powerful ;)
falkore24 10-11-2007, 11:45 AM What are you putting down? My engine's the bomb, it's the tranny that sucks! If I had a manual, it would already have some kind of FI. and when I add the wet shot I'll see you in the rearview!!!
