Default Transmission Fluid: Mercon, Dexron

My manual recommends Dexron II or Honda ATF transmission fluid, however, I don't think they make Dexron II anymore, or it isn't on the shelfat my local auto parts store. What can be used as a replacement? Mercon V?

if your OE specs called for Dexron II or IIE then the line of transmission fluids that are just standard multi-vehicle ATF's are the new Dexron lines, I.E. Castrol Domestic/Import multi vehicle, or any other brand that says just ATF. Z-1 is good as well, or AMSOIL ATF.

If you read the back of Advance Auto Brand Mercon V, it specifies that is a replacement for Honda Z-1.

Just curious, why not? I have heard that some 'house brand' fluids are made at the same plant as the 'name brand', they just change the bottle and label. Who makes Advance Auto 'house brand' fluids?

Im not sure who manufactures and bottles the Advance brand but trust me its not up to par even with the name brand fluids. Ive seen it run through old domestic vehicles and cause problems.

don't be a cheap **BUTT**, use honda OEM parts for the best results expecially in COLD WEATHER as Honda ATF flows better. I can never understand why people buy a car and then want to save money by using the cheapest stuff possible when doing maint.
