View Full Version : Wet Paint?
fireballer44 07-25-2006, 03:14 PM Hey anyone (probably RTexasF).....have you used the Wet Paint on any wheels? Mine are the factory wheels off my brothers 1990 Legend, the aluminum alloys (except I used Honda center caps). They can look really nice just after I have polished them, but get pretty bad after a little while. It takes me a couple hours to polish them, don't want to do that every weekend. I was curious if the wet paint would make a good sealer or perhaps a polish itself?
I just ordered some, my brother has a el cheapo paint job that is about year and a half old, has a nice mineral-looking white glaze over it [>:]. We are hoping it will make it look better. My paint is only about 6mos old and it was done by a pro, but if I like the stuff I will probably use it on there too.
RTexasF 07-25-2006, 05:28 PM I do use it on wheels for both cleaning and sealing. Once applied (I do it twice in a row) it makes them so slick that brake dust doesn't stick as readily and wipes or rinses right off. It should help the el cheapo paint job look a bit better but you'll have to be the judge of that.
fireballer44 07-25-2006, 05:54 PM I am sure it will help it look better.....it looked good at first. A good wax/polish would make it look better.

Be extremely careful when using polish on a cheapy paint job.......it can remove paint/clearcoat and make a real mess. You're better off using a glaze like WP to cover the imperfections rather than risking taking the paint or clear coat off or scuffing it requiring more steps to correct the boo boo. IF it can be corrected at all.
fireballer44 07-25-2006, 09:12 PM Yeah I am going to do the Wet Paint, I think it will work out fine. We have done it with the consumer polishes (like the Meguiars stuff) and it helps is out a lot.
BTW, check out my new post, you seem to know about paint, etc.....I have a little something that popped up that I am half worried about.
RTexasF 07-30-2006, 08:52 PM Tell us how it comes out and show some pics!
WheelBrokerAng 07-31-2006, 02:51 AM The Wet Paint after two coats like Tex said just makes the Brake dust just float away from the wheels..amazing product that just works everywhere there is a hard surface...you guys otta see my Washer and Dryer now, hurts your eyes to look at them..3 coats on them now Tex :D

RTexasF 07-31-2006, 10:09 AM It is amazing how many uses you find for it.
ozman05 07-31-2006, 11:52 AM OK I think I'm going to order some of this some in the next month or so, but I've got a few questions.
Does it replace the use of the conventional carnauba wax? How often does it need to be applied?
I don't have a buffer, so should I even bother with it now or should I wait until I do have a buffer?
RTexasF 08-01-2006, 09:25 AM This will answer your questions:

fireballer44 08-02-2006, 09:59 PM Everyone that is interested in this stuff.....we will be using this on my brother's car this weekend. I will probably do my wheels too. I plan to do before and after pics on the car and maybe the wheels (no laughing at my missing bumper [:@]).
So, maybe everyone will get a good idea what it can do.
fireballer44 08-04-2006, 11:59 PM Well, I finally got my wet paint (I kept putting off ordering it....my fault there). I have just used it a little bit as a trial. So far, I LOVE it! I did a few random things, wow!
WIll post pics next week.
fireballer44 08-05-2006, 06:38 PM Here is a pic of one of my wheels....this was the worst one. I spent very little time on it. I discovered that the Wet Paint is NOT a sunny hot day product, it evaporates way too fast. I will probably pull the wheels off individually next week and work on them inside, as I have too much crap in the garage that I am in process of cleaning out right now---can't fit the car :(.
Here is the before picture, the wheel doesn't match the center cap well (as the center caps aren't the original ones, it had Acura ones):

fireballer44 08-05-2006, 06:40 PM Here are the after pictures, I am quite pleased. I think it will do better with multiple coats and a good bit of time spent. I could get it looking well with Mother's aluminum polish before, but it only lasted a few days. I hope this lasts longer.

RTexasF 08-05-2006, 09:15 PM The paint has a nice reflection and the wheels look good too. Another coat on both will act as a sealant and really work wonders as far as keeping them clean and increasing the shine.
Every car I've done with WP (which are numerous) has been directly in the south TX sun with temps above 95. Here's some tips that will help on applying in full sun:
1. To start, spray the towel you'll be applying it with, then the surface. Once the towel becomes saturated you won't need to do this unless it gets filthy and you get a new towel.
2. Apply WP a little bit heavy on hot horizontal surfaces and work it into the paint immediately.
3. Do SMALL areas....1/2 a Honda trunk, 1/3 a Honda hood for instance. Vertical surfaces like doors can be done in one shot.......if they have been in the direct sun for some time then follow #2.
4. Terrycloth works well to remove the product but an additional wipe down with a good microfiber towel really makes things pop.
5. Apply to entire car, windows included, before starting the wipedown. (No time limit, you can wipe it off the next day or week)
Remember WP is NOT a substitue for polishing a finish that is in poor shape. It will make it look better but it's not a substitute for a machine polishing.
*The above tips are for hand application/removal.
**There is NO substitute for removing the wheels and cleaning them from the inside, called the barrell. I just did this on my two year old Accord and the results were remarkable. The wheels look three feet deep. This was done with Poorboy's wheel cleaner, a scrub brush, lots of water, lots of towels, and Wet Paint as the wheel polish/sealer. I applied the WP THREE times since I'm not nuts about pulling wheels off to clean them real often.
fireballer44 08-05-2006, 09:39 PM I will probably do the wheels that way next week, I just figured it would be easier to get them nice and clean to actually take them off and go sit in the garage and work on them instead of laying on the ground. I can probably get them done quicker any way. I have had those wheels looking pretty sharp before, if I have to I will do that again, but I want to use the WP as some kind of sealer. Hopefully, they won't start to look bad in a week.
Thanks for the sunny weather tips, I was putting it on the wheels and it was just drying up. It is only in the low 90s today, I figured it would be a nice day. Besides, it is just way too humid for any personal comfort, as it rained a ton yesterday.
By the way, I haven't used the WP on the paint....in fact, I haven't waxed it in a bit either.
RTexasF 08-05-2006, 10:04 PM OOPS! I assumed you had done the paint too....it really didn't pop like I would have expected which is why I said it looked "nice". Do the paint and post some more pics. Wheelbroker has one that, for some reason, he won't post here. It is absolutely a blow you away pic. Hound him until he shows it here. Do yours and let's see it!
fireballer44 08-05-2006, 10:09 PM Well, first I am going to do my brother's car. He is off to basic training and air force tech school on Wednesday, we will do his car tomorrow.
My car got hit and run last weekend in Houston and it ripped off the front bumper, I will be taking it to the shop on Wednesday, will probably have it before the weekend (I hope) or sometime next week. So I am waiting until it is all back together before I do any body detailing. I want to get the wheels fixed up before I take it in if I have time.
I just tried the stuff on his car, just a test for now.....did you have any trouble with swirl marks?? Maybe I used too much pressure or something. I gotta wash some towels before we do much to it, I just had a few small ones left. I will take pics before and after tomorrow on his car.

fireballer44 08-05-2006, 10:43 PM Oh yeah, I hear it never gets hot down there....:D. Yeah right!
We want to get his car nice and clean before he leaves, I will be driving it while mine is getting fixed.

I just made that up in photoshop, thought it would be cool.
RTexasF 08-06-2006, 12:29 AM Roy Oswalt//////////// The Wiz!
fireballer44 08-06-2006, 04:39 PM Here are some pics of his car. We pretty much did only Wet Paint, although a few areas are scratchX too from Meguiars. There are still some swirls on his paint, it is an absolute pain to buff for some strange reason. I don't think it is the product, but the paint.
I am working on sizing the pictures of the whole car now, here are some before/after ones I made up.

RTexasF 08-06-2006, 06:14 PM Considering that the car is in bad need of a machine polish I think the WP did a fantastic job. The paint went from dull to bright & reflective. The oxidation was removed also, good work and thanks for the pictures. Please do the same with your car.
fireballer44 08-06-2006, 06:31 PM Yeah it needs a machine polish.....bad swirls. I dripped sweat on it right before we did it, it wouldn't even wipe off :(.
I don't have a good quality buffer, just one of those consumer-type orbital ones. We would like to polish his car, but I don't want to screw things up. What would I need to do??
Breeze 08-06-2006, 07:22 PM Fireball that car looks like it has had a new paint job. That looks so good. The wet paint did that? It's really amazing!!! The rims even looks shinier.
RTexasF 08-06-2006, 07:23 PM I haven't seen one of those that has enough power to get rid of swirls nor do they have the assortment of pads required. Nothing short of a Porter Cable, Cyclo, or rotary machine will remove them. You can make it look better by applying the WP several times though. It gets easier each time as it layers upon itself and helps hide the marks while deepening the gloss.
Frankly I think the transformation is pretty incredible. Your brother will be thrilled........right before they shave his head!!!!!
WheelBrokerAng 08-06-2006, 07:54 PM Yes Sir she's lookin great..what a difference WetPaintGlaze does on a car...
WheelBrokerAng[sm=americanasmiley.gif]
fireballer44 08-06-2006, 08:04 PM Yeah I can't wait to get my car fixed so I can put it on there. My paint is 10x higher quality and only 6mos old. It will look insane.
Also, that paint isn't too old....about a year and a half. But it was a $300 paint job and didn't stay nice long.
03Sleeper 08-06-2006, 08:42 PM Lookin' fresh. I gotta get me some WP.
RTexasF 08-07-2006, 09:16 AM Now that I know more about the paint I would not attempt to machine polish that $300 paint job. The layer of paint will be so thin that it would likely cause more problems than it fixes. The rough surface will get smoother as more layers of WP are applied.
fireballer44 08-07-2006, 01:06 PM Gotcha.....it looks better than it did before anyway (i.e. extremely faded). I will probably put more WP on it later, gotta work on my own car.
fireballer44 08-07-2006, 11:13 PM Wet Paint on wheels.....wow
I took off one of my wheels and wet painted it. Cleaned it up real good with my engine cleaning gun and simple green first. Then I put about 4 coats on. Finished it off by putting some shine on the tire. It looks sweet, the best it has looked since I have had it. Obviously it didn't remove the chips and all but it looks GREAT for a 16 year old wheel.
Well, back out into the humidity hell to do another one. I spent an hour on this one, will probably only get one more done tonight.
WhyNotFab 09-22-2006, 05:27 PM so.. safe on painted gloss black wheels with polished lip?
RTexasF 09-23-2006, 11:50 AM YES! Safe on all wheels.
joseph956 10-24-2006, 04:53 PM WOW, i am completely sold on WP now... i had never been a big enthusiast on washing my car with THAT much detail, but now that i've got something new to work with im going to try and keep it clean on a weekly basis. it's been hard to do since it's been raining or sprinkling almost daily, PLUS i work in a very dusty area (mexican border)... but let's see how powerful this stuff really is ;)
so is there a certain way that i should rub this on? circles?
joseph
sir_nasty 10-24-2006, 04:57 PM if you watch the video it shows you how but you can basically spray it on, wipe it down, then use a circular motion to rub it in with a microfiber towel...
RTexasF 10-24-2006, 06:54 PM Joseph,
Where are you in TX? Mexico is just the other side of town from me. As sir_nasty said go to the website and watch the video. I suggest you apply and remove it twice in a row for best outcome.
joseph956 10-25-2006, 09:18 PM RTexasF,
I actually work at the Pharr-Reynosa bridge (checkpoint) with Texas DPS... so it's pretty pointless for me to go and pay to have my car washed, if by Tuesday or Wednesday it's going to be even worse than when I took it in. Anyway, I stay in Edinburg and Pharr... you're in Brownsville right? Nice to know someone closeby that is so knowledgable with Honda and related products :) So where do you take yours to get any work done? Is there a local place that has good prices on mod parts? or am I basically stuck with EBAY? :P Feel free to message me or email me bro and thanks!
I must've missed the link for the video... but I'll go back and look for it.

Can you purchase Wet Paint in automotive stores or do you have to order it from the manufacturer?
RTexasF 03-06-2007, 07:27 AM Order from here: http://www.wetpaintglaze.com/
There are dealerships that have & use it but there is no distribution network so it's unlikely you'll find it in a store.

Claying first is a smart idea because it removes the contaminants from the paint. I recently clayed a 2007 car in preparation for more work. By the time I'd done the hood alone the clay was filthy!! Unless your paint/clearcoat is failing and beginning to flake clay won't peel anything.
How does Wet Paint react with dust?
Does it attract and hold dust, repel dust, or does it act much the same as an unpolished paint job?
mrmookie123 03-09-2007, 07:04 PM ASW,
I just put Wet Paint on my Accord for the first time today... I don't see how anything can stick to the car after it's applied... It is sooooo slick and slippery now. I'm very impressed with this product... Any questions let me know.
HuYnHness 03-09-2007, 10:41 PM I just got my combo pack in the mail today I'm certainly amazed i did my car today too The garage is full of stuff for the time being and i jsut couldnt wait I had to do it outside and the spray particles are really small I ended up using like 6 oz (75% bottle) on my car i dont think i needed that much My car was filty from a week's worth of dust and pollen then soaked by a like sprinkle this morning needless to say my towel turned black I ended up finishing up in the dark so that made a challenge of wiping off i spent maybe over an hour on It removed some dull spots from bird crap which REALLY amazed me
I cant wait til tomorrow morning so i can get a goot look at it ill even take pics
