Bondo-ing Door

Bondo-ing Door
So I am thinking of doing some body work on my rear passenger door.
The person I bought it from had a minor incident and now there is a gash about 3/4 inch high by about a foot long in the dead center of the door going the length of the door.
I have done some body work in the past but have always had the end result of after painting, the work still shows slightly thorugh the paint.
I am guessing this is because I didn't use fine enough sand paper to smooth out the bondo after applying.
I usually use something like 220 to rough sand it and then like a 300+ grit to sand it before painting.
Should I use something a bit higher for the fine sanding and prep before paint?
I am trying to avoid that sheen the bondo areas tend to get after paint is applied.
Any help is appreciated
