Removing Side Mirrors?

Removing Side Mirrors?
On this older model Accord that my friend owns, he removed the side mirrors, used diamond plate to make a filler that just bolted right in using 3 bolts. He then capped those 3 bolts with chrome bolt head caps, then bolted billet chopper mirrors on..
I'm going for a similar look, but until I can afford the mirrors.. I was wondering if on my 1996 model, if I remove the mirrors (power) will there be 3 similar mounting holes that I could use to bolt my triangle shaped sheetmetal filler in place?
I'd be painting the metal the same color as my car, and instead of the ugly looking bolt heads sticking through showing.. I'm planning on tack welding the bolts to the inside, so it's all one solid assembly with no bolts showing, easily accessible from the inside.
Let me know if you know what's under the mirror piece if I take it off!
