so i have these kicker substation 80's they are 8inchers, one is missing a speaker and the other one is the original not sure if its shot or not need to hook it up, was thinking about just replacing them with a kicker comp 8" speaker, should i get a 4 or 8 ohm speaker?
the one i looking at specs:
the one i looking at specs:
- 8-inch Comp Subwoofer with 4-ohm impedance
- Performs in free-air applications as well as in vented or sealed boxes
- 200 Watts RMS (100 Watts peak) power handling
- 30-500 Hz frequency response

there are many 8 ohm car audio subs out there. back in the 90's there were more 8 ohm than 4 ohm subs. it facilitated wiring two in parallel for a 4 ohm mono load you could then power from a 2 channel Class A/B amp. Higher impedance results in a better damping factor for the amp. a higher impedance is easier to power, just more expensive to power.
Kicker, like many others, usually offered 8 ohm or 4 ohm for their SVC subs.

Those wattage ratings are suspect, RMS power is always less than Peak power. Either those numbers are reversed or they had a typo. typo's happen on websites, but owner's manuals are usually correct.
i like to have 1.5x the RMS power rating of the speaker available, that way I can set gains based on RMS speaker rating and not worry about pushing the amp into clipping or distortion.

Man i am so torn as to what to do here, if i end up getting a head unit we are talking about ripping the car apart and a crap load of work, on the flip side i can get a LOC and an amp and hook up my one existing box and be done with it. Buy a half descent amp so that if i ever get a better box and or head unit i can utilize the amp i have.
Questions:
what does SVC vs DVC mean. For my application of just wanting a bass sound from the speaker which would be best
also what does it mean when you run something mono, does that just mean one speaker?

SVC is Single Voice Coil.
DVC is Dual voice Coil
DVC offers higher power handling (sometimes) and more wiring options. DVC is also great for getting a lower impedance load. jL and other constant power amps can make rated power at a range if impedances.
Unless you have a large budget, build in pieces. Start with a good amp, like the JL slash series, and a good sub. Later, you can upgrade the HU, speakers, etc.
