RE: brands of AMPS?
Amp wise, I not only look at the brand and reviews, but also whether or not it has a built in fan.
This is just my opinion, but I would not buy an amp that did not have a fan built in. I know heat sinks work and everything, but fans just seem so much better.

Fans are good if youre running a very big amp but not really necessary for small or mid sized gear. So long as the amp has sufficient air space around it, it will cool fine.
Not knocking fans, but theyre not a necessity. Ive never owned an amp with a fan and have never had one overheat. So long as you set the gains properly and dont overdrive it, it shouldnt be a problem.
