I think its around 2 1/4" because a lotta of 7th gens have alpines in front. Just roll down your window all the way and then see what you have to work with. You may/may not need spacers.

Thanks... I always use spacers anyway. I have a ton of left-over scrap hard laminate wood flooring, which I find has great resonance. Plus, it's about the right thickness to make most speakers fit well. The Process for making a spacer are beyond easy. I always trace the patern of the factory speaker (to get the foot-print right), then I cut out the mounting diameter of the new speaker. Then walla! With the custom spacers being wood, it allows you to simply mount the spacer with the factory screws/holes, then drill new holes for the new speakers. Works so great, I've had all my buddies copying the technique (and stealing my laminate flooring)!

Thanks. I find the hard laminate wood really resonates well (great for SQ). It is also thick enough to get mounting clearance for those deep speaker magnets, but not too thick that it pushes the speaker uinto the factory grills. I also think it's an amazingly easy to work with (cutting and drilling). Just find some scrap wood laminate flooring... Most common size about 8" wide, so it will work with most speakers.

Cheers,

Actually, you don't want the wood to resonate at all. This is how you "should" install door speakers.

Well... actually, the article you referenced did the exact thing I mentioned doing. This article mentioned an optional addition of molding clay to increase the weight of the wooden trim ring. I don't do this. However, I do like the addition of the wooden trim ring for the resonance effect. NOT necesarily an increase of it, but a removal of the speaker from the metal door panel (which improves the resonance for car audio purposes). There's a reason most sub boxes are made of MDF and NOT sheet metal. We're probably on the same page here.

I am more into loudness then perfect quality. I have two 15" CVRs that hit really hard and already make the car vibrate. I am going to be dynamating the truck. I just want to know, other then for adding more space. Would that really make a difference with loud bass going?
