Horrible Rear Speaker Distortion
#22
Okay, I was just wondering.
My educated guess would be, at the moment the sub phasing is at 180* degrees, therefore when the sound waves hit the trunk, it would then be in phase (0*) with speaker sound waves after the reverb.

No doesn't work like that I think. I would set it back to zero, as with subs polarity does matter somewhat. The only reason you want the front in phase is because they are opposing each other, and the center console is in the way destroying any kind of imaging.

I could... just figured it was supposed to be 180* because the subs are firing to the rear and not towards the stage.
Are you saying that the polarity for the right side should be switched compares the the left side speakers? OR other way around?

Yeah you flip the polarity on the right speaker, why? I don't know. Ok now think about wave prorogation, even if the phasing is backwards the sub is still producing the same wave, just the timing is different. Know what I mean? Just because the cone is being pushed instead of retracted, when it fires forward it's still sending that wave forward. Also not all the bass comes from the cone, some of it comes form the box even with a sealed.

I've always heard having a sub(s) facing the back of rear seats, since i have a ported 12" L5, i decided to have it towards my trunk..nonetheless..my question danny is,my car was supposed to have a trunk cover, like most hatchbacks do,but i got the car without it,will that affect the sound i pretty much have nothing covering the sub.?

I'd imagine that cover would rattle and add unwanted noise, but I'm not really sure what your talking about. It defianlty won't add to the bass. While I'm not sure on this but I believe a trunk does not amplify the sound in anyway. If I remember correctly it takes about 5 feet for a 40hz or 50hz sound wave to form. That's why when your close to a sub you can hear the higher bass notes ok, but the real lows are really diminished. 40hz is very very low bass, about the lowest in any rap song. So my theory on why subs sound better facing the rear is more distance for the wave to form and propagate, just a theory but I'd bet money on it.

Either way if a trunk did amplify the bass, it would be because it is sealed or at least semi sealed, but I would think it would be louder in a hatchback. I would imagine some energy is lost passing through all that mass, especially if it is resonating. But sound is one crazy thing that I really don't fully understand.
