Default New Sub! keep_hope_alive

Well my Volfenhag died a couple days ago after some things in my trunk got smashed against it.

So I am looking at the following subwoofers unless you have suggestions for others that are not more than $83:

$74 INFINITY REFERENCE 1262W

$80 IMAGE DYNAMICS REF TM12.4

$83 JBL GTO-1214D

My current amp is Audiobahn A8002T

It had been so long since messing with audio that I am confused. Because of my amp, I would get the most power out of the Image Dynamics because it can run 2 ohms whereas the other 2 can only run at 4 ohms, correct? And it would be getting 400 watts instead of 200?

My Volfenhag was hooked up in series, is this how my new sub should stay? I don't want to hurt the amp.

that amp is 4 ohm bridged mono stable. so you want a single 4 ohm SVC sub or a 2 ohm DVC sub. i'd go with one of these

Thanks for the suggestions!

Of the ones you suggested, which would you go with? It looks like the MB Quart is the most expensive (best sound quality?) but also is the 500w RMS like the previous subwoofer I had.

It also looks like I can get this in a DVC 2 ohm. Image Dynamics

Also, what is the proper way to break in a subwoofer?

subwoofer break-in happens when you play the sub at low-moderate volumes for about 40 hours. there are two ways to do this:

1. install the sub but keep the volume low-moderate. or turn down the subwoofer gain so only moderate excursion is observed. this actually takes a long time considering it takes weeks to drive for 40 hours.

2. hook up the sub in a house to a receiver, and let it play at low volumes (even free air is ok at low volumes) for a couple of days. this is the fastest method but requires you have equipment in your home and the ability to drive a low impedance speaker (wire any DVC in series)

you need to revisit your gain settings. they should be re-adjusted per this:

subs usually blow from clipping - it is likely your amp was clipping. you'll destroy a new sub quickly if you don't ensure your gains are properly set and matched.

... I know several people who have liked the MB Quart sub. It has the highest list price, but mostly because of the name. RE makes nice subs, the RE12 is a solid choice. I would go with one of those two - whichever you like the looks of and the mfr of.

Thank You again very much!

I have heard some people mention using a tone cd to break them in. However, more than likely I will put my subwoofer adjusted on -8 or so on my headunit.

The gain isn't what ruined the sub, it was because groceries were against it so it couldn't move. I'll have to try the tone thing. Here are the controls I have:

I think I am going to go with the MB Quart.

Both the MB and the Tidal are DVC 2 ohms. So how many watts RMS do you think I would be putting out?

The Tidal is 300 RMS and the MB is 500 RMS. So would the Tidal sound better b/c I am closer to its RMS?

And how will I hook these up?

a 2 ohm DVC would be wired in series for a 4 ohm mono load. I'd go with MB Quart over Tidal.

also, pick up a sub grille while you are at it...
