Angry '05 V6 Tranny Failures?

Common as I've been reading?
Driving Accord or Odyssey for close to 30 years, never an issue until our '05 EXL-V6.
Bought it new, always dealer serviced. My wife drives this car 99% of the time.
162K km ( 100667 miles) trans. quits completely. No previous issues, no warnings.
Dark brown fluid, piles of filings on the drain plug, not a good sign.
Plan was to give the car to our oldest while he's finishing university & buy a replacement car for ourselves. Well..........$3500.00 later & a rebuilt trans. it's now his.
We were shocked to the point we didn't even consider another Honda.
Bought a replacement vehicle that's much nicer for less $$.

Cheers,
Steve Craig

On the 05's, no....if this was a 98-02 then yes.

The "dark" brown fluid statement has me confused? At @100K miles, IMO should have been about due for the 5th drain and fill....listed as every 20K miles.....some of these did/do have a filter that can/should be replaced.....depends on year and engine....too lazy to look if the 05 had it or not.

Car was due for service but the damage occurred sometime since last trans. fluid change.
Only filters/screens are internal, means pulling the trans. to get at them.
No notice at all, just fell out of bed & was done.

Brown fluid colour usually associated with excess heat & suspended debris. The car doesn't have a remote cooler, only a loop thru the engine cooling system.

I was really looking forward to a new 2013 Accord EXL V6. The '05 was $35K new + tax. The '13's will likely be priced closer to/over $40K locally.
We drove an '11 in May & almost bought it, circumstances changed when one of our sons decided he wouldn't be home for the Summer.

While searching this Summer I stumbled onto a deal I just couldn't pass up.
Fellow in Halifax wanted out of his lease on an SUV. Did the math with his remaining payments + the residual buy-out at lease end. Had the local dealer handle the paper & the car is now in the driveway. Very nice car & saved over $10K on anything I could find same year & approx. mileage. Ours was the lowest mileage vehicle in the comparisons.
'10 Lexus RX 350 26K km ( 16K miles ).
Not knocking the Honda product but this car is a far superior vehicle. Not an equal comparison either with a 4 dr. sedan vs. a 4 dr. SUV with AWD.
Amenities I can't count, super comfortable.
HID headlights that turn with the steering wheel, auto-dimming headlights, rain sensing wipers, heated/cooled seats, electric windshield defroster around the sides & bottom for snow build up etc...
Paid substantially less than what the '05 Accord was as new.

The 2005 Accord V6 does have a transmission filter that is replaceable without pulling the transmission. Refer to post #23 and # 25 in this thread:

https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...n-44485/page3/

While, it is not common like the 6th generation (98-02) Accords, there are still reports of some automatic transmission failures on the 7th generation Accords. I change my fluids on my 8th generation Accord pretty frequently to try to prevent problems, more frequent than any Honda recommended change interval.

The transmission to fail at 100k+ is disappointing.

Checked the service records on the car. ATF changed at 55681 km (34600 miles) & 104037km (64600 miles). No mention on the records about the filter.
Like changing the motor oil & leaving the old filter on the car!
I'll be doing some research into this one!
Possibility the cars intended for the Cdn. market may differ from the US version?

Thanks for the help.

Cheers.

Although the filter is replaceable, Honda doesn't consider it a normal replacement part. They usually only change it if there are some issues. However, some DIYers do change it themselves.

Jusr reading this thread, This is the reason i stay away from the accord v-6's. The 03 was a nightmare for this, tons of blown trannys at EARLY mileage. Not saying all 7th gen v6 accords are sketchy, but the v6's sure outnumber the i4's in transmission problems/failures.

Always dealer serviced, lady driven. 2012 is 28 years driving new Honda products every 5-6 years.
The more I read on-line the more I see this is not an uncommon event with V-6 Accord, Pilot & Odyssey.
Talked to your office a couple months ago with reference to a new '12 V6 Accord with a US only colour.
Talk to me. I'm spending $3500.00 for e rebuilt trans. on a 7 year old car with relatively low to average miles.
Why should I buy another Honda product?

Sent the invoice in as requested. Not sure where this will end up.

Nice, i've seen they work with you depending on the situation (mileage and years old the car is) but even if they pay some, its still better than nothing..and it should say something your going to the dealer to get it rebuilt, That your not messing around. Best of luck...

Had a rebuilt trans. supplied & installed at a local transmission shop. I did not go to the dealer for this as I would been out quite a bit more.
I spoke with the dealer today & they've since been contacted by Honda Canada
confirming service history, purchase history etc..

Not expecting a whole lot will be done at the end of the day.
Will advise here on how it gets handled.
