Default 16mpg during break in period?!!!!??

I just purchased a 2010 exl v6 last week. Had to fill up the tank today for the first time and after calculating the MPG i averaged 16mpg!!! is this normal during the break in period?? it is supposed to get 19 in the city and 29 on the highway. I have not been horsing the engine. I do not go over 3500 rpm and stay under 65mph. I only have 287 miles on the car so far. Is 16mpg normal for a brand new car? is the mpg going to increase after the break in period? i've been very cautious as to how i drive so i break in the car properly. There has been 2 or 3 occasions where i have reved the engine above 4000 rpm during pick up but i still kept it under 6000rpm. only reason i do this is to give the car a taste of different rpms so it'll break in properly. also my driving has been about 70% city 30% highway. With that said i assume my mpg should have been around 20, right? definitely not 16!!

Yes, it will increase during and after the break in period. I have heard you should not go over 55mph during the break in process.

Also, because components are getting quite a bit of wear and tear, be sure to change the oil about twice as often as you normall would. Such as 1,500 miles or so.
