Default '92 Honda Accord lack of power?

VIN Number: 1HGCB7674NA155657

I have a '92 Honda Accord with 254k miles on it.. I've replaced the Tranny, Alternator, Battery and Computer in it.. I'm having issues where, when I take to the Interstate, I have to ride at 3,000RPMs to do a steady 70MPH..

I've never driven a 4banger before but I still don't feel this is right, it took a nice little bit of gas to make just 10 miles on the interstate, or so I feel it did, I may have just exaggerated how much gas it used in my head because I was concerned about the high RPMs, I will test it again later to see if it truly used a lot of gas..

Also; when I am coasting down large hills I feel like there is something holding the car back, instead of gradually building speed like it's supposed to, I either stay at the same speed or slowly lose speed going down the hill, as if I have the brakes pressed in..

It also doesn't shift until 3K - 3.2K RPMs and, when it does, it shifts rather hard, causing the entire car to jerk a bit.. Is this normal as well? Again, I've only ever owned V6s which shift between 2 and 2.5k..

The ABS light and the Brake light is on, but the engine light is not..

Also: The four red door lights flicker on and off from time to time, as if some ground is making contact over and over, they slowly light up, then get really bright, then they'll dim again.. They repeat this the entire time I'm driving, as if a wire is bumping against something causing the light to activate and deactivate.. The "Brake Warning Light" or whatever it's called which is below the car's picture on the display is also lit up at this time..

Does any one know how I could fix all of this? I want to make this Accord a pristine car but the mechanic doesn't seem interested in hunting down these issues with me.. :[

its almost sounds like your e brake is on maby the previous owner tightened the brake cables because they were loose and over tightened them.

This random guy that comes in my store [I am a cashier] told me that it sounds like I've "lost some compression and I need to replace my engine because it's so old".. How much validity does that statement hold? Do you think it's more likely there's an issue with the E-brake like you said?

I just drove it to work.. If I shift it into Neutral while going down hills it feels like there was something holding the car back, like it was pushing a box up a hill and, when I shift it into neutral, the car isn't trying to push anything anymore.. It just coasts down the hill completely fine.. When I shift it back into D4 it feels like I'm applying the brakes, or it's being held back by something again..

Edit: While idling it has a slight ticking/knocking underneath the hood.. I can't feel anything but it's very audible..

If it were a newer car it'd sound like the Honda Grade Logic Control to me, but I don't think the earlier models came with those transmissions. If it doesn't get held back when you shift into neutral, that mean's the transmission/torque converter is locking up and not allowing the car to shift.

Alrighty.. I have some **** called Shudder Fix that a Mechanic recommended I get a month or so ago..

A concentrated friction modifier formulated specifically for INSTANTLY eliminating torque converter lock-up shudder
Would that particular additive be smart to use? I'm very wary of additives, especially when it comes to the Transmission. Or do I have to replace some piece of hardware to try and fix this, Cyanide?

NO NO NO NO NO....

Do NOT put any additives in your transmission. They are usually way too thick and will ruin your transmission.

I'd check for codes anyway, service connector is on the pass side under the glove box.

You want to be sure there are not any stored codes in the ECU (CEL) or TCU (D4).

Instead of adding "that stuff", drian and fill the trans fluid - I suggest only to use Honda Trans fluid.

I'd also check the throttle control cable for proper movement and adjustment.

The Throttle Control Cable is on the top, above the engine, right? I watched a YT video and tightened that the other day. There's a port for people to hook a computer up to my car and check it for codes?? I was told by a Mechanic that cars as old as mine didn't have that! Lying douche. lol

I gave the car a tune-up yesterday and it didn't really change much.. It's still doing the same things.. :[ My brother said it may also be the Throttle Position Sensor or something like that.. So, so far, the list of things I need to check out are as follows if I am correct..

  • Emergency Brake.
  • Torque Converter.
  • Drain/Refill Trans Fluid.
  • Throttle Position Sensor?
Now I've had someone say before that "The Transmission should die with the fluid it was born with" is that true? Will it hurt the Tranny to replace the fluid in it or is that just a over-safety superstition?

Sorry I'm asking so many questions, this is the first car I've babied.. I've always loved Hondas and this is my first one so I'm trying to make it pristine. :P

Thank you guys SO much for the help!

Sounds like a good list. Not sure how you're going to check the torque converter.

As for the fluid, it honestly depends on its current condition. How many miles are on your car? Check the fluid. If it is really, really dark then it might be bad to change it as new oil will dislodge any gunk and ruin your transmission.
