Engine swap F23A4/F23A1
Hey all....I have a 2000 with a F23A4 engine w/ a 5 speed manual. I am loosing about a qt of oil every 250/300 miles. Friend of mine owns a repair shop and did a leakage test and I have leakage beyond the rings.
At this point I am looking at a salvage engine for around $500. Couple questions....
1. are the F23A4 and F23A1 engines interchangeable?
2. I am relatively handy turning a wrench as long as I have some direction. Are there any good videos or step by step instructions to do the engine swap?
Just looking for some direction or any other suggestions.

The ULEV engine (F23A4) also involves some substantial changes to PCM and wiring harnesses. It might be easier to take a F23A1 engine and "turn it into" an F23A4 by swapping over all sensors & using the F23A4 exhaust manifold.
The front exhaust sensor is very different. It's a wide-band O2 sensor rather than a "normal" O2 sensor.
Check part numbers for other sensors. Use some on-line parts dealer by checking the "EX" and then checking the "EX-ULEV" versions of the car. Also check the distributor, I really don't know if that's different.

I ended up buying a salvage F23a4 engine. My question is on the removal of the engine. I have a 5 speed manual transmission. Should I remove just the engine or both the engine and transmission? I am hoping to start on this tonight so I appreciate some quick feedback...Thanks !
