Default Girlfriend wants an Accord...what engine should I hunt for?

Im trying to find an Accord 94-00 or so for my gf and was wondering what would be a good choice for an engine? She's wanting a good compromise between performance, economy, and durability...are those goals possible with an automatic Accord? I know nothing about Hondas or their engines...so Im looking for suggestions. Thanks.

None of those years are overly fast. The only warning I can give is that the 98-00 automatic transmissions(especially in the V6s) are garbage, and I would stay far away from them).

The EX version in the 94-97 is considerably faster than the dx and lx. Also the V6 isnt any faster in the 94-97 than the 4 cyl is; just worse gas mileage.

Yeah Im not really wanting to build her a rocket sled just something that'll look good and get up and go if she has to say...get around a semi really quick. Ive heard the EX are more desirable for the 90's models. Are there any certain engine codes I should be on the look out for? Im open for suggestions...what are your preferences? thanks

All the 94-97s had F22s, the EXs had the F22B1 with 145hp and the LX/DX had the F22B2 with 130hp. The 98-02s had F23s. I would just aim for an EX because it will have more power as well as more luxuries like power windows and door locks.

just swap for a h22 engine and call it at day. You will get roughly 70more hp out of this engine and it will be faster then another STOCK accord on the street. Also for the auto trans...stay away. EVERY YEAR auto trans jus stay away..Unless she HAS to have a auto. Honda autos are fine on stock cars but one you add more power they get weak. My accord has had 3 auto trans. I got fed up with them and now I swapped out to a 5 speed.
You can swap a h22 engine into any accord from 90-02 maybe 03 accords. H22 engine will run about you about 2 grand plus whatever the cost f the accord is. G/L Let up know what you end up doing.

the f22b1 is a fine motor to use because of the tourqy feel that it has, she doesnt need a rocket, but that motor has enough grunt to put a smile on her face, definitley get a manual trans though because auto's are garbage, and if she doesnt know how to drive stick then teach her, its something usefull to know. just my 2c

there is a lot of difference in styling between a 5th gen and 6th gen as well. i agree to stick with a 4 cyl in those years. maybe look for a 97 EX.

We found a 96 or 97 Accord EX automatic for like $1400 with 135,000 on it and wanting to look at it asap. It looked good in the pics and supposedly runs and drives good so I dont know what the deal with it is. Is that a good price?
