Default Honda Accord New Timing Belt Seems to Go Whirrrrrr

Got the timing belt changed today on my 1999 Accord VTEC.

After driving about 3 miles I noticed a distinct whirrrrrr when accelerating. It wasn't there when I drove the first three miles, but seemed to start up or announce its presense before I parked up.

Should I be worried? Should I speak to my local garage? What do I do and what does this mean?

Richybaby,

How many miles were on your car when you changed the timing belt??

When you did change it did you change out to tensioner, the water pump, and all other belts??

Hi,
Car has 124k miles. Just changed the timing belt. The garage mechanic said there were two belts, apparently, and that it was "a kit".

Good thats how the belts come in a kit. Is the nosie like a loud squeak? Because if it is it's possible that the machinic could have put it on wrong.

I would return the garage for service. Several possibilities; tensioner improperaly re-installed or belt not tensioned properly. It should not make a whirring noise. Don't wait for belt failure and possible engine damage.

good luck

Sometimes brand-new belt makes a whirring sound until it gets worn just a bit. Or it might be over-tightened. Either way, the shop that did the work should check it out.

most new timing belts get slightly overtightend when fitted which causes a whirring sound, most of the time it wont be a problem, depending on how loud the noise is determines wether it is too tight or not,i just did a water pump and timing belt kit on my 95 accord 2.2l and they are a bit awkward to adjust, the spring tensioners are never strong enough too adjust the belts properly so i put some extra tension on mine slightly cause id rather have then too tight than too loose and it does whine a little, the only thing that may get damaged is the water pump the rest is just bearings and cogs,if u are worried take it back to the shop just to make sure its nothing else, although everything should have been checked when they had it apart,my water pump failed at 170000km,cant really tell u much more without hearing it,but im almost certain its the timing belt
