I can see mandating it for 1000 miles or so, but I'd expect at 1000, break-in is done.

Sent a sample in to Blackstone; when I get results Ill post something about how well the Honda maintenance-minder works.
OK...

2007 Civic
R18A1 engine
5-speed manual tranny
17,615 miles on the car

Castrol GTX 5w-20 oil
6,152 miles on the oil
oil life monitor read 10%
PureOne oil filter

Analysis was good for the low engine age.

numbers that stand out & Blackstone comments...
10ppm Al from engine parts still breaking in.
20ppm Si from sealants still baking out.
181ppm Na which is apparently in the additive package of the oil.
TBN was 3.0 meaning the oil still had some life left.

Blackstone recommended I could go somewhat longer on oil changes. For my part, Ill probably just feel comfortable relying on the oil life monitor but allowing it to go all the way down to zero.

Between 11,000 & 17,000 miles I was still getting a little elevated Al & Siin the sample.

Default old school? new school?

hi:

I just got off the phone with Honda in CA. I was concerned about the 60% oil life left with 4,800 miles on the odometer. According to the maintenence minder this oil (first one) change will be somewhere near 10,000 miles. That sounds like a lot of miles to me.

My honda is an 2009 accord v6, 6 spd bought new, June '09. On pg. 297 of the user manual its says the onboard computer calculates the remaining oil life based on the engine operating conditions. In other words (and according to the rep) the computer actually determines the QUALITY of the oil based on your driving habits.

My '07 toyota solara has a maintenence minder but it comes on at 5,000 intervals no matter how you drive. In addition the rep validated that Honda does use a special break-in oil whose additives are proprietary and cannot be revealed. He said it's not necessary to change it (and he knows how hard its to break old habits) until the maintenence minder says to. pg. 248 states during the break-in period 600 miles "do not changed the oil until the scheduled maintence time."

So while I still believe that 10,000 miles is a lot it cannot hurt the vehicle if you want to change the oil at 5,000 intervals all the time. It will just hurt the wallet a little. But that break-in oil should be change when Honda says it should. regards...
