Thermostat Upgrade for a 1993 Honda Accord EX 2.2 liter.
Hey everyone. Just made an account today after seeing the site. Pretty awesome. My car is a 1993 Honda accord ex, and it's the same one grandma used to pick me up from kindergarten and such. Ahh memories, such a good good car.
Anyway! This upgrade, Idk if it's well known, but being in my automotive class, I went to change my thermostat. Since the car was taking nearly 30-40 minutes to get warm, and...it NEVER left the cool marker on the Temp gauge. It would barely rise... So, i changed it, the old one was actually broken open, but the other issue was it's temp.
The stock one in my car was 172* Degrees. (*=Aprox)
That's pretty low... So I gave it a 192 degree thermo.
What did it do?
WONDERS!
The idling and over all running of the car greatly improved, acceleration and just pretty much all that jazz became much better and smoother.
And, my main enjoyment, In the gas mileage. The car is said to be near 22 and 28, And now it's about 25 to 32. Actually, I have gotten 37, but that was driving 55 mph, for....... about 300 something miles non-stop. And with almost no change in speed the whole way.
But still, I would definitely recommend changing yours to a 192.
The only draw back, is that your fan will run after shutting off the car, but it doesn't do it for more than say... 4 to 6 minutes. Anything greater than 10 might be a problem. But it should be fine, I've had it for a year like this, and I don't see any problems.
Also, the temp gauge rises to about 2/5 Or just slightly above 1/4, and never moves. The temp NEVER rises above the half point of the gauge.
So.. As far as me and my auto instructor can see, there are no negative side effects. He said 172 is pretty low for a gasoline engine.
Anyone done this? Or heard about it?
Let me know!
Thankx

well your temp gauge can only read 3 temps...
1)cold
2)opperating temp
3) overheating
I have seen this done with older mustangs where you swap to a hotter thermo and you gain a few hp. Not sure if that applies to our f22 engines tho..

Well, it didn't become like super fast or anything, just much smoother, and slightly quicker feeling. The temp gauge just barely moved up, it looks like it is where it should be now.
172 is just pretty low, you could also try a 185 if you are unsure. But I've had this thing in my car for almost 2 years it seems now, and nothing is going wrong. No leaks, nothing, I had my cousin check it out, he owns his own shop and whatnot.
I am actually going to get the shift cable checked, or something, going from park to reverse and back to park is extremely hard. :[
Then the timing belt tomorrow.
