Thank you all for the help, I really appreciate your suggestions! The car has an automatic transmission. I don't know when the last tuneup was done (my in-laws have let my daughter drive it for about a year, but they aren't able to recall much due to personal reasons). Just from appearances I would estimate the distributor cap, rotor, wires and probably plugs were changed within the last few years or maybe ~30,000 miles, but that is just a guess. The screws on the dist cap are still shiny.

I think I have a 12v test lamp, I will look for it tonight after work, and I will definitely check the ground connection.
