1996 Honda accord LX speedometer sluggish
Hi,
My speedometer is working but it gos out from time to time. Like it just stops reading for 20 seconds and then it works again. I read online it might be the sensor or cross my fingers it isn't, the speedometer itself. Can I get an expert opinion?

Does the cruise control work when the speedometer is not working? Have the car checked for engine codes at a place like autozone. Post the code number on here. The codes start with the letter P and have 4 digits, like P1234.

The P0420 is for the catalytic converter or the secondary O2 sensor. That shouldn't cause any problems with running the engine. That deals with emissions.
The P0740 is for the lockup system on the transmission. You may want to change the transmission fluid using Honda ATF if you haven't done that in a while.
Since you don't have a VSS error code, then it could be the speedometer. If you know how to repair solder joints, you may be able to fix it yourself.

I just recently changed the transmission fluid. Should I still be getting the error code? Is that something to worry about?
And how hard is it to take out the speedometer from the dash? I think my dad could re-solder some joints, but getting it out could be another story. I guess I'll look for directions in my Haynes manual
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Its not too bad of a job. Just download a 94 shop manual from one of the links in the Online Manuals thread in the DIY section. It will show the location of the components and screws that you will have to remove.
