Default 1997 accord auto trans problem

i have an 97 accord w/an auto trans. when i go in reverse it makes a loud clunking sound almost like a pop can being crushed and seems to stall for a moment, then it goes again. there are no ecu codes that come up. any help would be very helpful

Can you pinpoint the location of the sound? Open the hood, have someone hold the brake & shift. Look for excessive motion (bad engine mounts) or at least get a better idea of the location of the sound.

the sound comes from the area where the axle on the drivers side goes into the trans

And I forgot to ask... V-6 or 4-cyl? Those may as well be completely different cars 'cause they have so little in common.

I'm not much an auto-trans expert so I hope someone else chimes in. But crunchy noises like that - if it originates within the transmission itself - doesn't sound good.

Fluid level OK? Fluid condition (hope the fluid isn't 12-years old)?

Maybe the sound is the inboard CV joint of the axle??

it's a 4 cyl has around 160k miles on it, fluid and cv joints were changed about a year ago, it was making that noise before that so i thought it might have been one of them, turns out it wasn't
