1997 accord ex auto transmission trouble help
i just got a 1997 honda accord but the automatic transmission shifts weird from 3-4 gears. it revs up then it will go in gear once its in gear it drives fine i drove it from new york to south carolina a few times like this now. i have changed the fluid 3 times now in hopes that would help it hasnt though. when i got the car i put new axles and new belts in it and i really like how the car drives but it has 148000 miles on it so im not sure if i should spend $2500 on a new transmission. the car is in excellent shape other than this. can someone help me out on things i can try that maybe would help? i know alot about domestic cars and i have plenty of tools. has anyone ever rebuilt one of these that they can give me pointers if thats what i need to do? thank you for any help -charlie

Hi,
I agree with you about spending $2500 but for under $200 you can take your car to any garage that only(mostly) do tranny. They will not only drain the oil from the pan but also flush your entire tranny(cooling lines, torque converter, etc)and check the tranny for wears and adjustement(bands) if any, according to your complaint. If nothing can be done without being too extensive , they will tell you what's the problem and how much.
Avoid garage that does everything,it ends up costing you more and most of the time not too sure what's the problem.

Does the D4 light ever blink? If yes, this indicates a Trans Control Unit (TCU) diagnostic fault is stored. Even if no D4 light blinking, there can be a code. Use same procedure as ECU to short the service check connector and read flashing codes.
A mid-adjusted throttle cable (too long) can also cause this symptom.
See Online Manual and download 94-97 Accord manual for throttle cable adjustment procedure.
good luck

thank you for the help
im sorry i didnt explain this before better but when i said that i changed the fluid 3 times i meant i flushed it 3 times a friend of mine has a flush machine. it seems there isnt any bands in this transmission and there isnt a pan. the filter is in the transmission and to change that i hane to take the tranny out and then apart. ive put about 5000 miles on it and there isnt any codes in it. im going to look into the cables today also ive heard maybe i can take out the 2 solenoids on the top of the tranny and they have screens-filters in them and i can try cleaning them. is this true? thanks again for any help -charlie
