Default 1997 Accord Tilt Steering Column Issue

I am not sure how to phrase my question so please bare with me. The lever that locks the tilt in place has gotten loose and slips down, and if you don't know it, can hurt your knee. Is there a way to tighten that. Also, today, when I lock the tild steering in place, there is a little play. Is that something I can easily fix myself. If so, where can I get the instructions. Thanks so much!

remove the lower cover (about 7-10 screws) then adjust the bolts as seen here.

Just a couple of wrenchs, you can buy the "spring scale" if you want (same basic thing as a small hanging fish scale) or just go with what feels right...

Thank you so much. I am so glad to have found this forum with knowledgeable and helpful people such as your self. You just decreased my stress level 100%. Last question. Will this solve both my questions of the level slipping and the play even when locked into position? Thanks again

those two bolts should adjust how tight it is and how well it holds the steering wheel, so yes it should fix both your issues unless something else is broken, it sounds like they're just loose to me...

Go MT! I'm all of 120 miles away.... used to go to missoula nearly every weekend

Again, my thanks. Missoula rocks. Do you ever come up for a Griz Football game? If so, let me know, beeer is on me!

PS. I tried to email myself the diagram so I could forward it to my buddy so he can print it for me, but it hasn't come yet. If possible, could you email the diagram to me? Thanks. If not, no worries.

This is somewhat embarassing, but I will be the first to admit I am not a mechanci by trade. I have to thank Sir Nasty for all his help thus far, but need one more favor. I tried to find a diagram showing where all the screws/clips are to remove the cover in which to access the bolts that require tightening, yet could not locate them. I removed all the screws that were visible, but the cover is not coming off, and I do not want to pry on it. Is there anyone who could email or post a digram showing the proper way to remove the cover? Thanks so much. I will ahve to throw a party for those who help me.

http://www.dhost.info/accordinfo/ has a shop manual in pdf form. The pdf you want is the steering. Page 17-30 shows the diagram.
There isn't anything really tricky. You might want to get a flashlight and make sure that you got all of the bolts out.
