1998 Honda CRV AWD Transmission Problems
Hi All: New member just signed up today. I have the following vehicle:
Make: Honda
Model: CRV
Year: 1998
Drive: AWD
Mileage: 225350
Transmission Rebuilt: 2008 at 165000 miles.
Engine: Replaced with Japanese low mileage (35000) engine in 2009 at 180000miles.
Driving up a high gradient on way to work yesterday, the transmission took longer than normal to get into overdrive. On starting vehicle after being parked for about 6 hours, there was a loud clunk from park to drive. Then when driving, clunk from 1st to second, and softer clunk from 2 to 3 and then to OD. This morning it was cold outside (50degF) and experienced the real loud clunk from Park to Drive, then loud 1st to 2nd and less intense from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. Once warmed up the clunks went away. Also noticed the following:
1. Fluid changed out 4000miles ago. and fluid is not burned indicating clutch plates may be Ok.
2. Since last rebuild noticed vehicle would tend to slowly roll back on an incline if I did no have my foot on the brakes. This morning I put it in park and kept it in my garage drive way, not an overly steep gradient or ramp, and the vehicle began to roll back almost immediately.
So do you thnk I have a tranny problem or is it my linear solenoids? Would a flush and linear solenoid changeout do the trick or do i need to head to the "tranny doctor"??
Any advice is much appreciated. Some of you might have had the same problem in the past and may be able to cut some of the guess work out.
Much obliged to all who can help.

Update to Transmission Problems
Sorry for posting it in the wrong forum. Anyway, I have been unable to replicate the problem with the vehicle since yesterday morning. I suppose I will just have to drive it until it repeats the problem.
Anybody who has had similar problems please advise.
Thanks all.

Since the Transmission change. Have you been letting your car warm up before actually driving right away?? Also what kind of transmission Oil is being used for the transmission fluid flushing. Check engine light or transmission light or any flashing light coming on. If you have a solenoid problem or anything electrical has to set off the Engine light. The oil is important too. If using genuine oil or just regular conventional oil for the transmission.

It still hasn't acted up after that first event. I run the car for about a minute or more each time before taking off. Fluid is clear, not burned and is Honda genuine transmission fluid. I checked with one source who thinks it might have been some crap in the valve body that kept a valve from shutting corrrectly. I think that is the most logical answer. Thanks every one for your responses. I'll have to once again drain and fill and check for debris in the drained fluid.
