There were several intake valves loose, and a few exhaust tight. Way out of spec? Didn't gauge to see by how much out they were. Believe it or not one adjustment nut was off of #5 intake adjuster and laying beside spring.
compression test was done with all plugs out, fuel pump and ignition fuses pulled. Did not floor pedal. Didn't see where that would help or hurt, any take on this will be accepted and used.
we took for test drive after clearing codes, ran good, but was doing well before. Will let y'all know if code returns.

You floor the gas pedal, so the cylinders can pull the largest volume of air through the intake.

Wide open throttle is used for the specifications in the shop manual. You want to test the same way to compare to those numbers for optimal and minimal compression. You also have a chance to observe larger variation between cylinders.

That makes perfect since, thanks. My results were ok, maybe would better with this technique. But is retest necessary for better diagnosis? I have a feeling the tarnish on inside back cover had to with valves being slightly out of adjustment. Appreciate all the help so far.

Just an update...after breaking a valve cover bolt, I thought it best not to drive until I could replace it. So it's been sitting waiting on some parts to arrive. I was able to remove broken bolt with some work and foul language, replaced and got all new gaskets for plenum and throttle body installed. The motor sounds and feels strong, gonna drive it some and see how it goes. If all is good and no check engine light on after a week or so, I will post results. Keeping fingers crossed!!!!

I would suspect someone earlier performed a botched job of adjusting valves. Hopefully fix is permanet.

good luck

I tried to do it by the book and hope it IS fixed. I drove it to work last nite, idled the car on my breaks and drove it back home (80 miles round trip), so far no CIL.(knocking on wood).
I will go ahead and say I may be back with bad news or not, but I definitely owe all of you a huge "Thank You", especially MR. TEXASHONDA. You are very knowledgeable and you made all of your comments very professionally and easy to understand. All of you made me feel welcomed here and hopefully one day I can return the favor.
God bless you all!!!

Just for anyone that is curious about the status of my car, it's been almost 2 months now and still haven't experienced a CEL. Of all the things that I done, I'm 100% sure it was the valve adjustment that fixed the car. Hope this helps someone else....and again, thanks for all the help.
