2001 accord ex 4 cyl vtec--> maintenance questions
recently purchased what appears to be a well maintained sedan(automatic trans) for college age daughter (140k miles)... am trying to "go thru it " before letting her take it to school
a. only fuel filter that shows up in the haynes manual appears to be the fuelpump"sock". is there a downsteam unit ? if so, where is it ?
if not, would you recommend changing the fuel filter sock?
b. also do not see any replaceable transmission filter (fornormal preventativemaintenance). haynes only talks about changing the fluid with no mention of filter changing. is this correct ?? Would dextron 3
be ok to use ??
c. do not see any simple way of inspecting timing belt condition
(access port plug orpartial inspection cover to remove). is this
an interference engine that "self destructs" when the timing
beltfails ?
d. other than brake conditions, any other maintenance items i
should proactivelyinspect ??

You only go change the fuel filter sock if you have low fuel pressure;
drain the trans and refill with 3 qts of Genuine Honda Z-1 ATF
The T-belt can be inspected by loosening the valve cover and thentaking off the top timing cover you can use a strong flashlight to look at the backside of the belt where it goes over the tensioner. If you see any cracks at all at the base of the teeth replace the belt.
Sure check the brakes/spark plugs/air filter/ and maybe a throttle plate clean with a toothbrush and spray can of carb cleaner

RE: 2001 accord ex 4 cyl vtec--> maintenance questions
Is it 4-cyl or V-6?
That's right about the fuel filter. Not a routine replacement.
Same with the tranny filter. Have to dismantle the tranny to get at the screen, but again, it's not a routine replacement. Furthermore, Honda trannys don't like power-flushing. Drain & fill. Repeat multiple times if fluid is nasty/dirty.
Use Honda ATF from a dealer. Pricey, but people have reported troubles when using Dexron.
Condition of brake fluid & anti-freeze? Lots of people don't realize they both need to be replaced every 2 years.
Power steering fluid? There's no replacement interval, but I'm always skeptical whenever anything is supposed to last 'forever'.
On the 4-cyl, it's not too difficult to remove the upper timing cover. Replace timing belt evey 90k miles, so you would want to find out whether it was done at 90. The 4-cyl IS an interference engine. I think the V-6 is too, but ???

On the 98 - 02 models, the t-belt should be changed every 105k miles or every seven years....whichever comes first. And JimBlake already answered your other question...yes...interference engine so: t-belt braking= totally screwed.
