2001 Accord V6 CEL code P0740
#2
This is a tough code to fix.
P0740 means the trans control unit has detected that the wheels and engine are not directly coupled; slippage. The reason is the lock-up system of the torque converter is not functioning. Reason could be faulty lockup solenoid, faulty internal check valves, hydraulic circuit leaks, and other internal transmission faults. You will need a shop manual to run down all the possibilities. Only the lockup solenoid can be replaced, and if it's electrically defective (short or open), you would see a different code form P0740. Fundamentally, the fault is hydraulic, not electrical. It is possible the lockup solenoid is hydraulically defective and not allowing fluid passage when opened (internal blockage), but this seems unlikely.
How did I learn about this code? I have a 1997 Acura 2.5TL that continually sends this code due to faulty torque converter or other fault. It's not worth pulling/replacing the trans, which shifts just fine. So I live w/ constant CEL.
good luck

sorry it took long to reply. there is a recall for the accord 2001 cuz of premature failing transmission. i replaced the selenoid and cleard the code. no problems persist. for the people that can afford it. you can add lucas stop slip and it will help reduce wear and lubricate the selenoid that are failing(basicly getting stuck) and clear the code it and will be good NOTE! it wont workd right away it will take a couple days for the lucas trans no slip oil togget in because it is really thick and takes time to get around the transmission
