2002 Accord EX (160,000 miles) oil leak on top of engine. I have oil residue coming from the engine both on the front and back. The oil is pooling in the back and causing smoke when at a stop. Is this the head gasket? Or possibly the valve gaskets? My (Dad) mechanic will look at it soon but we are trying to diagnose in the meantime so that we can decide what the budget for repair will be.

You need to figure out the highest point you have oil. By the pictures, I'd say the valve cover gasket is a possibility. Look at the bottom of the picture. The head gasket is lower than where you see oil, so i doubt this is the issue. I can't remember if the 2002 had a distributor or already had the individual coils. If you have a distributor or a cap where the distributor would be located, then look in that area as well for an obvious leak.
