2003 accord - power steering hose broken
Hi,
a few days ago I noticed there is smoke coming out of my car after driving for a while, so I went to my mechanic to check it.
Today he told me my high pressure power steering hose is leaking and I need to replace it.
Cheapest part he found (after making 2 phone calls) is for $155 and labor he says is 2 hours = $120.
I found the hose online here:
RockAuto Parts Catalog
or here for $78
EDELMANN 92157 Steering Pressure Hose | eBay
for considerably cheaper. Can I just get that? I need to save as much as possible as I don't have much extra money and this was unexpected
Also, is there any way I could exchange it myself? He said it is a relatively difficult 2 hour job - and I am not a very technical type, but am willing to learn from some videos/manuals and attempt to do it myself.
Also, he said it might be dangerous - that it could blow up, is that true? Also he told me to check my powersteering liquid every morning and refill it in case it gets lower and that with this way it could last for up to two weeks.
I asked him if there is any way this broken hose could be fixed, he said no, is that true?
Thank you for your time and help, I truly appreciate any insight.
P.S.: My car is a Honda Accord 2003 ex coupe with a v6 3.0.

Funny, how same problem seems to arise in bunches. I just found a leak in the HP hose of my Acura MDX w/ 3.5L V6. Basically all the Honda/Acura V6's have the same arrangement for HP or feed hose.
Unfortunately this is not an easy job. I did some googling and found several repair descriptions:
2004 Honda Accord V6 Power Steering Hose Leak - Honda-Tech
'00 Power steering hose replacement
I am planning to do this job next week and will report my experience. It looks like a back-breaker job from remarks in the posts.
BTW, the OEM part is about $100. You don't want to pay to do this job twice w/ a sub-standard aftermarket part. Don't go cheap on part.
good luck

Thank you for the input.
What I understand is that I should not get a cheap part and I should not do it myself.
Is it ok if I get the part from honda majestic?
53713-SDB-A01 004 001 HOSE, POWER STEERING FEED $ 97.13

There was someone not too long ago that had an issue - smoke from between the engine and the firewall.......I think, didn't look at the links, the tricky part has to do with a mount on the rear......do a search, I think the OP had an '03.

That price sounds OK for the part.

The difficult parts are:
1. Getting a wrench in there to loosen the pressure hose fitting from the steering rack.
2. Rear engine mount bracket needs to be removed to remove/install power steering pressure hose. Can be done without removing rear engine mount bracket; there is a member (EXV6NIGHTHAWK) here that has done it without removing the mount bracket.
You will also re-use the pressure switch from the old hose (not difficult; but, I included for informational purposes).
If you have it repaired by a mechanic, make sure he/she allows you to bring your own part. Some shops do not allow you to do that.
If you're willing to tackle it yourself, make sure you properly support the car while it is lifted.

Or is there any way i could find someone in the los angeles area to help me do it for cheaper than the mechanic?
I found this video and it doesn't look that hard, but that's for a mercedes..
Is it very different on an accord than on this video?
Thanks

It's a little more difficult than that video.
Changing your Accord V6 power steering pressure hose is more like this Acura TSB for the TSX (although a TSX is a 4 cylinder):
http://www.heeltoeauto.com/files/pit...l_bulletin.pdf
Just for informational purposes, this is the Acura TSB for changing the pressure hose on the Acura TL (a slightly larger V6 than your V6) - Changing the hose on your Accord should not be as complicated as all the steps shown for the Acura TL:
http://nhthqnwws112.odi.nhtsa.dot.go...8V091-5036.pdf
2 hours labor for $120 in the L.A. area is great.
P.S. There were recalls for the Acuras; but, not the Honda Accord.
