Have a 2004 accord ex that started blowing hot air out intermittently. When it is blowing cold, it will have a 'funny' smell (like crayons) and then start blowing hot air. It blows hot out all of the vents. Currently, it blows hot more often than cold. Could this be as simple as needing refrigerant?

It could be, but you need to measure high & low pressures to be sure.

Besides, that leaves the question of where is the leak. You (or your mechanic) can use a dye to find the leak. If you don't fix it, it'll just leak out again.
