There was a change in pcv valve style starting with the 7th generation Accords.

The oil consumption most likely has nothing to do with the pcv valve on the 2008. Regardless, is the 2008 Accord a 4 or 6 cylinder?
not sure if you were asking me or the op, but mine is a I4.

Yes, I was asking you. Here is a DIY with pictures, even though I don't suspect that will stop the oil consumption problem.

Honda Accord PCV Valve Replacement Guide - Pictures Illustrated Automotive Maintenance Guide

Sometimes the crush washer will stay stuck on the intake manifold instead of coming off with the pcv valve. If that happens, place a shop towel under that area and use a flat-head screwdriver to pop it off. The shop towel is to catch the washer without it falling in between somewhere like near the drive belt, etc. I once did that without using a shop towel and the washer came off and was stuck somewhere I couldn't see it. It wasn't on the ground. About a week later, it finally fell out.

thanks for all the help, but we are going to dump the car off on carmax or honda, whoever gives us more.
i'm certain the vtc actuator is the culprit, and she has had the startup grind for some time (with honda turning a blind eye). i'm worried that the catalytic converters are going to have a shorter life because of the excess waste blowing though them, and the internal damage is already permanent.
thanks again.

Roastbeefmike - If there is something mechanically wrong, then go ahead and dump the car. Honda Customer Service is terrible and I can relate entirely to your frustrations and their unwillingness to help. But let me offer you one suggestion. Give me 1300 miles and I'll report back whether my oil consumption problem has been eliminated by switching to 5w30. The Honda mechanic that changed my oil agreed that this would solve my problem. Worst case I may have to go 10w30, but he doubts that I will. He uses a heavier oil then what is recommended for his brand new Infiniti and everything has worked out for him. Anyway, give me a few weeks and I promise to respond to this thread with an update.

Good luck to all of us!

i would be interested to see what it does just for kicks.

once i figured out the likely culprit, we quickly dumped the car.
we ended up trading the car in after getting a few quotes on it. it was an 08 4cyl with about 72,000 miles. no leather or anything, just power windows and locks.
carmax offered $11k and that was the highest bid we got.

we found a great deal on a certified 07 lexus is250 with 30,000 miles. girlfriend is happy and the payments are pretty low.

The IS250 is an awesome car and I'm sure that you and your girlfriend will definitely enjoy it. I'll respond at 1300 miles to let you the oil status.

RoastBeefMike - So after driving about 600 miles my car has consumed about a 1/2 quart of 5w30, which is about as much as it consumed 5w20. I'll probably end up going with 10w30 next. Not sure when, but I will at some point.

Oil spends most of its life at the higher end. So if you are thinking that way, 10w-40 would be the next step.

The Honda mechanic advised that I go to 10w30 if 5w30 didn't improve the oil consumption. Why would he suggest 10w30 if otherwise? I just want to be able to provide a good explanation when I speak to him next.

Thanks!
