2011 Accord Rough Shifting & Engine Braking

I wish I could lend credence to your "learning" suggestion, but my wife is the main driver of the car and its rarer than a $3 bill for her to exceed 3500 rpm while driving.
I won't contest the 3 pedal remark; I drive a manual too.

Koss02,
I definitely will. I paid cash for my Accord and it's a shame to be out all that money and have issues like this on a brand new vehicle : ( I don't trust dealers, never have, never will. All they're interested in is getting the car off their lot and out the door. Also, our Accords are so new (2011) that it will be months before a something like this will be deemed a common problem among Accord owners. For better or worse, I will start some kind of dialogue with the dealer to see where it leads me. I will keep you posted. Incidentally, my ATF level was good when checked cold. I have not checked it hot... but I will. Thanks for your response.

Transmissions began getting some smarts about 1998 ("grade logic") and seem more sophisticated over the years since then.
I'm not saying it was correctly learning that. But maybe there's some way for it's learning to be cleared & reset. You used to be able to clear that stuff by disconnecting the battery, but everything uses non-volatile memory these days. Not sure how that can be cleared to force it to re-learn from scratch.

Thanks Jim,
I'm going to wait until my first oil change to bring it back to the dealer and ask about the resetting option. I also have established a direct dialogue with American Honda and I will ask them directly.
Thanks again

Big_Ron,
It's important to make sure your Honda dealer makes a record of your concern so that it can be reported to Honda. Honda won't pay us any attention unless the problem is pervasive. I've noticed that the colder the temperature, the longer it takes to shift smoother. If the temp outside is >80, it shifts smoothly in ~5 mins. The engine breaking never goes away. I've also noticed that my MPG has been 16 mpg in the city for every tank-ups (>5). This is with my wife driving (like a grandma, with the ECO light always on). If you take the car on the highway its great ~30mpg. In the city, terrible...makes me think the rough shifting is a contributing factor. I'm giving it a year to get fixed, or I'm selling it and scratching Honda/Acura off my list.

As I read this thread, I'm struck by the dealership. Not only do they have poor customer service, they have poor customer service defined as a *process*.
My deal with a car is that I take it to a dealer that says "bring it in as quickly as you need and we'll take care of it".
The idea that I have to convince some mechanic that I can bring my car is in, well, irritating to say the least.
I hope at least you got a fabulous deal on the car.

I understand that these things happen - small variations in the quality of a product.
I'd be less adamant and forthcoming about my dissatisfaction if the problem wasn't so central to enjoying the car. Anything that compromises powertrain (PT) performance ( or brakes, etc) and ultimately leads to unpredictably in the operation of the vehicle deserves immediate attention. I think a year is more than enough time to address this issue, plus its costing me money with the low MPGs. Further, the PT is having to absorb the loss of energy resulting from the rough shifts and this can't be good for PT longevity. And lastly if left unfixed this drastically reduces the resale value of the car. Summing these problems, I'd say our vocal dissatisfaction is warranted.
And yes, the dealer has not been very helpful. I'm bringing my car in for an oil change next week. I've logged MPGs & commented on driving conditions (city/hwy) & PT performance for every tank-up in my first 3k miles. I'll have them augment my file with this data. I'm not sure how much more the dealer can help me if they can't pull any error codes from the car. They've reported my complaint to American Honda (AH) and I don't believe the dealer can make warranty repairs without AH consent or an AH TSB/PUB. Earlier someone suggested a reprogramming/replacement of the TCM/ECM, I'm going to push that issue with the dealer.

I have this basically same issue with accord 2008 v6 AT - same specs as yours but 2 years older.
I read somewhere a guy got this issue fixed by having the dealer replace the torque converter, but I have not been able to get my dealer to do the same (bastards basically lie in your face about this not being a critical issue and makes driving the car experience absolutely horrible).
Trying again with a dealer farther away, maybe I'll get lucky.
