2017 Accord Sport 6 speed - 2.4l pinging
Hi,
I am new to the forum and wondered whether anybody has had this experience with their new Honda Accord.
I live in the Baltimore / Washington DC area and took delivery of a brand new 6 speed sport sedan in July. Incidentally traded my identical 2014 with 98000 miles for the new one, even with same color. Had some issues as the car came from the factory with poor steering alignment and went through 2 sets of tires getting constantly cupped before discovering the problem. Of course Honda never admitted any responsibility.... However no detonation or pinging ever!
The new car started pinging between 2500 and 3000 rpm with 5000 miles or perhaps I didn't notice it before. Only does it when the engine is under load. Tried different brands 87 octane and the noise never went away. It does not do it if the engine is cold. Tried 93 octane and the noise went away!!! Took it to one useless dealer who couldn't even hear it. Took the second dealer for a ride and they heard it in 10 seconds. The car was there the all day and they had contact with Honda. Honda now says that's normal and nothing can be done about. I have now spoken with Honda on the phone and they are basically telling me to get lost....
In the meantime the car has now 13,000 miles and the noise seems to be getting worse. I am concerned about the longevity of the engine as I usually keep it to 100,000 miles and think this engine will not make it that far. Would prefer not have to run 93 octane as I do quite some driving and becomes expensive.
Please let me know if somebody has encountered a similar challenge.

You should find out your state's lemon laws to have as an option to return the vehicle.
Honda should repair and engine problem, since this is a new vehicle. Did you talk to customer service on the phone, or were you on the phone with the dealership?
