(5th Gen) 1994 Honda Accord LX -- error 09 (CYP sensor, signal noise)
Hi folks,
My mechanic can't quite figure this one out and after a lot of googling, I haven't been able to find a conclusive answer either. He is an older, semi-retired mechanic and worked on a lot of cars of this era.
Car is a 1994 Honda Accord LX (about 85k miles, auto).
Runs beautifully with one lingering issue.
Symptoms:
- Sometimes when the car starts up you can feel a very subtle hiccup and the check engine light will come on. The car drives normally once its started.
- Sometimes when you start it, it will turn over, but won't fire up. You have to crank it three or four times. It will eventually fire up just fine and then drive normally. T
- Sometimes it starts normally, drives normally, like nothing is wrong at all.
My mechanic scanned the code, and it comes back "09 CYP sensor signal noise." The CYP sensor is in the distributor, which was replaced twice. Currently has an OE or equivalent, i.e. quality distributor.
First thought was timing, which he double checked with a timing light. So that's sorted. The ECM was pulled out and put back in, so a little "turn it off, turn it back on again" technique was applied ( I read somewhere of some person having this miraculously sort the issue out).
I'm considering ordering a used ECM and another distributor, because that seems to be what things are pointing at, but it seems odd the ECM would fail even if it is a bit older. Same with the new distributor, but it's possible I suppose.
I feel like there is something fairly simple that is being overlooked, but have not a clue what it might be. This issue pops up a lot online, but the only solutions I've seen were "use OE distributor instead of generic Chinese replacement," "replace ECM" or "correct timing."
Does this ring any bells for anyone out there? It's a head scratcher.

I copied a thread created by TexasHonda with the same problem. He was a superuser on here, and I learned a lot from his posts early on when I started doing DIY work. His turned out to be the ECU. You can assume the distributor isn't the issue after replacing several times. That leaves the wiring through some connectors or the ECU.
