82 Accord Atuo Trans Shift trouble
first, this is litterally the car that belongs to the little ol lady who does not drive in the rain or snow - car is my moms.
I borrow it allong with other family members on the rare occasion that out vehicales are down, or in my case - for trips to LI durring the winter months when rideing the bike is out, my wife an kids usually stay longer than I - they drive down separate
the trans is shifting wierd so I went looking for infor - I GOOGLED the problem and found this post - but it is 10 years old!
it describes the situation precisely.
I just need to know if it is safe to drive on a 300 mile round trip this week end before having it repaired.

I have an 82 Accord[/b] and recently its automatic [/b]transmission[/b] has
developed strange habits. When completely cold, it would not
shift at all. After you drive for a short time (a mile or so) it
will start shifting[/b] into 2nd gear, but not into 3rd.
It has to warm up really well to start shifting[/b] into 3rd, and
it doesn't really shift as well as it used to: it will revv the
engine by 500-1000 rpm before it shifts, especially when under
load. After it warms up, it up****s really easily into 2nd, and
easily into 3rd on a level road or downhill. It always downshifts
OK.
Does anyone have an idea what's going on? First I thought it was
the fluid, so I took it to a Honda[/b] dealer and they changed it. But
it didn't help. I checked the level after they put a new fluid
and it looks a little bit high. But it may be that the place I
park is not as level as I think it is. So is my tranny going the
big Auto Tranny in the sky? Is it easy to fix it (preferably
myself)? Or it can stay this way for a long time? It's not really
that bad after the car warms up, so if it's not going to become
worse, I may just leave this way.
Any replies will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
George .

RE: 82 Accord Atuo Trans Shift trouble
I'm trying hard to have a good Flashback; [8D]I seem to think the problem is the governor 'O' ring leaks on those older units, to cause that problem.
I would say the trans should make 300 miles. Let the engine get up to full operating temp before driving, to help yourself.

now another question - I am a Shop teacher and pretty decent with a wrench - been to 2 mechanics so far and neither want anything to do with this trans due to it's age - ma has had it meticulously maintained - might the govener o rings be something I could tackel - even if I have to pull the trans?
or would we be better off just letting the car warm up real well and driving it till it pukes gears - I mean it is hardley ever used so a major repair just isn't justified here money wise, but the car is cherry and almost never goes out of town except for the once or twice I take it down the highway.
