Welcome!
Nobody can help you here, this is just a welcome & introduction spot.
I'll move this to General Tech, and give it a DESCRIPTIVE title.
5-speed or automatic??? Don't make us GUESS.

Sorry, I figured when I moved it over here, someone who already knew the answer would chime in.

I looked at an on-line parts place, and the axle assemblies have completely different part numbers for those 2 years. It's not clear to me WHAT the difference actually is, so I don't know whether you need to use the 84 axles or what. Hopefully they're not different at BOTH ends.

Well I can't say that I ever tried to make a frankenstein axle; however if you remove one of the inners from each year you should be able to see if the inner joint from the 84 will swap onto the inner end of the 88 axle. They all used a 3 bearing roller system back then; and the roller bearings are mounted on 3 posts on a collar grip ringed onto the axle shaft.
Bear in mind that when you remove the CV boot retaining strap, there will be some nasty watery grease in there. it will puke out everywhere. lol
Clean it all up and then you can see about swapping the parts, roller bearings and or the entire roller bearing assy, IF the axle splines are the same pitch/diameter.
Of course add fresh CV grease to the monster if it does work and be sure to have that trans FULL with fresh 10w30 oil.
