Default '88 LXI transmission issue

Well, I just fixed a start-up problem only to have this now blow up on me. The details:

Car has always been difficult to shift out of park...sometimes end up in D3 and have to move back into R or D4. This has gotten worse. 2 days ago I couldn't get it into P. When P was illuminated on the dash and the lever was in the P position, the car would move backwards. It would still drive fine and shift fine up to highway speeds. Today, however, the car not only can't get into R, it has no Neutral idle and when I drive, it won't shift at all out of 2nd gear. It only starts when the N light is illuminated, but it isn't really in Neutral at all. I can drive (in 2nd gear) with R, N, and all three D lights illuminated. Note, I cannot even get the lever into the P position anymore.

No chk engine light. My brake lights are working. The shift cable is properly adjusted, but could be broken somewhere?? I don't really know much about auto transmissions. I have the service manual, but am at a bit of a loss here...

Thanks

Hmm....you aren't getting any responses...I will try to help..

First thing, check your transmission fluid. It may be low and it never hurts to change it or have it changed.

I know more about manual transmissions, but it seems that many shifting problems on automatics are related to a lack of fluid. As for the car moving while in park, there is a slight possiblilty that the lock gear (guys please correct me if this is incorrect terminology) is torn up. The lock gear is what holds the transmission in position while it is in park, it is the only thing I know of that makes it different from neutral. I don't really think this could be the problem as nearly the only way to tear this up is to put it in park at 50mph and I think most older cars would let you.

Bottom line, my #1 recommendation would be to change that fluid completely. I would also recommend replacing it with Honda ATF.

Hope I can help a little bit.

Just spoke to the mechanic...Shift cable is busted. At least it isn't the entire tranny, but I'm looking at 250-300 to fix this. Thanks for the reply, Fireballer.
