Oh, a 3rd gen (86-89)......DX, LX or LXi...auto or manual.
Double check the cable connections, both cable ALL ends. Clean and tight?
Then can you help with a bit more info-when it stops trying to start, what is the voltage at the small cable on the starter?

Check the connections of both cables at the battery and the other ends of those to be sure they are clean and tight.
If that does not solve it, pay attention to the lights on the dash.....when it starts vs when it "stops trying".
Cool-I've got an 89 LXi(I own it the boy drives it). My 89 LXi is a two door coupe....the rest are 4 dr.
