Sounds like it could be worn-out brushes in the alternator. Once it turns at sufficiently high RPM, it's OK. I think you can get a regulator pack with brushes. Maybe you can just get a pair of new brushes?

I think you can just get brushes, they're like $4/pair or something.

I believe AutoZone has them, but they're online too, you can even rebuild it with high output brushes (so I've heard)

This is the brush you need (2 of them)

But I can't seem to find where you purchase them... maybe try calling the company?

Try this place too: http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/altbrush.html

Default batt alternator check

why not invest in a simple volt meter and a hydrometer, you can check out the battery easy enough, a dc volt meter dont cost much and you simply connect it to the batt terminals and start the car, voltage shuld be at leat 13 volts, you can turn on lights and a/c and voltage should keep up, it can be as high as 14.5 volts, if not clean batt terminals and starter conectons and try again, if the voltage is not there buy a alternator, dont buy it from advance auto parts . or auto zone, there elec parts are cheply made and junk in my opinion, i put 5 starters on my car before i got smart and bought one from napa. you can also try a junk yard part is you wish. when you do the hydrometer test all cells should have a reading simular to each other.
The last time i bought a alternator from auto zone i found out it was putting out 28 volts and it destroyed my lights and battery, so you know what i think about there elec parts. will always give you a replacement but i get weary changing parts over and over, also what about all the other damage done. Be sure all elec conections are clean and tight

Thumbs up update

none of the usual franchise auto parts stores around here would sell the brushes.

NAPA wanted $30.
honda parts site $19 (+ shipping)

i went to a place that rebuilds alternators and starters and got the brushes for $6!

installing today, weather permitting.
