Question 91 Accord dash light problem

Hello,
My 91 Accord Auto 2.2 L is having some dash light problems.
Please see pictures for more detail

I have to hit the top of the dash multiple times to get the lights shown in picture 2 to turn on(the overhead dash lights)
The 3rd picture is what the dash looks like when i shine a flash light on it for refrence

The 4th picture is usually where i hit it

btw it has over 300,000 miles on it

Please please help

I really do hope it is a fuse

Thanks

It is probably not a blown fuse if you can get the bulbs to turn on when you hit the dash.

I would test the dash brightness controller.

See the pdf at this site:

A bulb needs voltage and ground. Doing the input tests will help determine if the problem is due to missing voltage or missing ground part of the circuit.

It is much quicker compared to removing cluster to test.

You can use a volt meter. The light switch should be turned on when doing this test. The key may or may not need to be turned to the II position.

1. There should be zero resistance (closed circuit) between the blk wire and ground. Any bare metal inside the car will work. Look under the dash.

2. There should be 12V between the red/blk wire and ground.

3. Use a piece of wire to connect the red wire to ground (use a piece of wire to connect #3 red pin to #1 black pin). See if the lights turn on.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you know how to test for voltage and ground using a multimeter?

btw if i connect the red pin to the black the wire im using heats up and nothing turns on

if i connect black to red/black the lights light up but still not overhead lights like in picture 2

i still think it might be a short up in the dash...any suggestions?
