Exclamation HELP! 91 Accord Smoke coming from steering column!

Hello and thanks for reading this! Last week, the turn signals started blinking as if I had the hazard lights on. Coming home today, wisps of smoke were coming from the steering column! The right turn signals are blinking, but nothing on the left, and using the turn signal in the car doesn't make any difference.
Last month, the car wouldn't start intermittenly, and my mechanic replaced the distributer cap and rotor button, which seemed to resolve that problem.
Are the two related?
The vision I have in my head is of FLAMES shooting up out of the steering wheel while flying down the highway..... (overactive imagination on that one I'm sure!)
But some feedback here sure would be appreciated!

it sounds like the turn signal circuit shorted out somewhere in the column. the distributor thing wouldnt have anything to do with it. i would take apart the column and see whats going on.

Thanks for responding! While I have a small collection of tools, including the phillips head for the screws in the column, I wouldn't really know what I was looking for! Loose wires like when I rewire a lamp?

I do have a friend with a much broader knowledge and bigger selection of tools, but he is hesitant to "screw around with anything electirical for fear of causing a bigger FUBAR"
