Default 94 accord EX speedometer problem

I have a 94 accord EX with the 4cyl vtec motor, automatic

There is a problem with the speedometer. I first noticed that it did not work when you first start driving and after you have been driving for a couple miles or a certain amount of time it will start to work. I have since determined it has a mind of its own and only works when it wants to. When it works, it does not jump around - it works as it should. the cruise works and the trans shifts smoothly.

I had the dealer install a new VSS, but there is no difference. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The speedometer is the problem. Mine would get stuck at 19 mph, then start working fine. I sent mine off to a repair shop I found online and the problem has come back since.

By 'speedometer' do you mean the actual instrument cluster?

Yes.

The speedometer can be removed from the cluster (be careful not to damage the needle when you do this). In the DIY section, the ACC 5th gen... thread has a link to a site that has pdfs of a 94 shop manual split up by chapter. One of the chapters will show you how to get the cluster out and take it apart.

I took it back to the dealer (i just bought it from them and they said it would be fixed) and they said that there is a part right behind the instrument cluster that is bad. What is this "part"? Anyone have similar problems?

Hmmm....see if they will tell you exactly what it is. My speedo was doing the exact same thing in the money pit. Now it doesn't work at all. it just bounces aroundthen sticks at 40. I know it's something internal, but I don't want to mess with it since I don't know anything about speedos.

Jon, I didn't know you looked that sexy in your speed. But now you don't do anything? What happened to the bouncy around? It was entertaining to say the least...

the part they are referring to is the speedometer gauge. the actual motor that controls the needle. they aren't too difficult to do, but you sound weary about tackling that job[8D]
