94 accord EX speedometer problem

RE: 94 accord EX speedometer problem
thanks hondatech. would step by step directions be in the haynes manual or something similar? I don't mind doing my own work at all and would most likely not have much trouble doing the work. The reason i don't want to however is because i just bought it and the dealer said they would fix it so i'm going to let them do it.
I will let everyone know the exact problem once it is fixed. in the meantime...is this a common problem? What concerns me is how long the problem has been going on. It shows 117K, but if the probem has been going on for a long time it could have 200K for all i know. It is having this problem with no check engine light on, which is a little wierd in my mind. i heard the check engine light doesnt come on unless it compeletely stops working. is this true? I mentioned this on another thread, but is there a way to find out the true mileage? carfax matches what is shown on the odometer.

RE: 94 accord EX speedometer problem
The exact same thing happened to my accord about 7 or 8 years ago. The speedo would work sometimes, then crap out and get stuck on 20 mph. We let it go for a couple of years, during which mileage would not register whenever the needle was stuck on 20 mph. Finally ended up replacing the entire cluster, and mileage was set back to 000000.

the part they are referring to is the speedometer gauge. the actual motor that controls the needle. they aren't too difficult to do, but you sound weary about tackling that job[8D]

RE: 94 accord EX speedometer problem
they charge me a whopping ZERO...which is unique for a dealer right? the reason is - i bought the car (used of course) and the speedo was acting up. They didnt want to sell me the car at all because it wouldnt have the acutal mileage. i didnt care becasue i could tell the car didnt have many miles because it was damn clean and ran great. I told him i'd still buy it if he knocked down the price...which he did. I was going to replace the VSS on my own and thought it would be fine. WEll when i picked up the car they said they replaced it (didnt charge for this either) becasue they didnt want it to leave the lot not working. I was okay with that, but when i drove away it wasnt working again. I immediatly drove back and said it wasnt working anymore so they ordered the speedo part and i brought it back in a week later so they could put it in.
o yeah and they didnt replace the entire cluster because i had a bulb out...so i bought bulbs and brought them with me and asked if they would replace the one that was burnt out. They said they replaced 2 when i got it back. well later that night i found out they did replace a bulb or two, but not the one that was burnt becasue i still have a dark spot..and now an extra bright spot with the new bulb. o well...i thought about putting int led's anyway.

That seems extremely odd to me that they would replace a part, then take all of the extra time to roll the odometer back to zero. Not to mention rolling the odometer back to zero is illegal.
