This shot is from the front of the tranny, just beneath the battery.
I've done my googling but can't find anything about it.

The mechanic who did the work, well, isn't answering my texts.


Concerning the ECU/PCM, I know 37820-PAA-407 is the one I need (possibly), but it's proving hard to find on ebay.
The ones in this screenshot (Replaces), I was able to locate several of these, about $50-70 on ebay. Would they work?

The F23A1 engine is vtec, so you'll want a pcm for a vtec engine. I think the 98 EX PCM is what you'll need.
