Default 95 Accord LX D4 Transmission, SRS and CEL Lights

My first post since I have been able to solve most of my issues by checking your informative forums. Sorry for the length of it but I wanted to be as complete as I could. I have a 95 Accord LX 2.2 AT that I recently changed the transmission with a used unit with approximately 65K miles on it.

The transmission appears to be running fine but it does have a flashing D4 light, a solid CEL, and a solid SRS light. I ran the procedures listed here as well as checked on other forums, on diagnosing and resetting these lights. After jumping the Service Connector located underneath the glovebox, I was able to retrieve a couple of codes.

The CEL flashes 6 times (error code 6) then repeats, which I have found out to be the coolant temp sensor. This makes sense since a coolant temp sensor just above the transmission housing was busted and glued back together since the terminals did not appear to be damaged and the cracked piece was able to fit back in place. I have since picked up another sensor and will install it tomorrow to hopefully clear this error code.

However, the SRS light is flashing with what appears to be five long flashes and two short ones. This repeats and no other codes. This would indicate an error code 52 which I cannot find anywhere. The only work that could have affected this was the replacement of the turn signal/light assembly by a mechanic friend of mine, especially since I did not have this light before the replacement.

The D4 light flashes constantly with no changes in duration or with pauses between a sequence of flashes as does the CEL and SRS lights. The transmission fluid was changed in the transmission with the recommended one and level is fine. The transmission also runs well.

After I ran the codes, I tried resetting the SRS system with the jumpering of the connector by the drivers side fusebox with its connecting and disconnecting within 4 seconds, etc., and the TCU by pulling the 7.5A fuse in the main engine compartment fusebox, but the lights are still there indicating that a fault is still being recorded. I am somewhat at a loss here and really would like to exhaust all of my possibilities before having to go to a dealer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, I pursued attempting repairs to the issues that I had identified in my first post. I replaced the coolant temperature sensor as I indicated that I would and found that the connection was loose which could have been the cause of the error code 6 that I was receiving. Since I had a replacement sensor anyway, I replaced it and then disconnected the battery cable to clear the codes. Well I was very surprised that not only did the CEL light go away but the flashing D4 light went away as well.

I am still stuck though with the solid SRS light. I tried resetting it again but no luck. When I jumpered the Service Connector again behind the glovebox, the CEL light no longer was flashing but the SRS light still flashes an error code 52.

Anyone out there have anything they could suggest that I have not tried? Thanks in advance.

101 SRS Unit Replacement Code (SRS Unit Must Not Be Used Any Longer) **

** SRS Unit May Discharge Airbag('s) Without Warning
1* Intermittent Internal Failure Of The SRS Unit Or Intermittent Failure In SRS Indicator Light. Do Troubleshooting For Intermittent Failures on all SRS Sub Systems.
2* If Multiple Codes Including 51 Are Indicated Troubleshoot All Code Except 51, Then Clear SRS Memory And Recheck SRS Indications. If 51 Doesn't Reappear, It Is NOT Necessary To Replace The SRS Unit.

To Reset the SRS Control Unit Memory

1. turn ignition switch off, remove MES service connector (Yellow 2 Pin Connector In Dummy Plug At Fuse Box) Note: Should be EZ to remove and have NO pins in the Socket it was pluged into. some fuse box's have two and one is for the power to the Controler and has a Lock type Connector that is Hard to remove.
2. connect (jump) the MES (Memory Erase Signal) connector (this is 2 pin connector wrapped on yellow plugged in the front of the underdash fuse box)
3. turn ignition switch on
4. SRS light will come on for 6 secs then go out, remove the jumper within 4 secs after the light goes out.
5. the SRS light will come on again, reconnect the jumper within 4 secs after the light has come on.
6. the SRS light will go off, remove the jumper with in 4 secs after the light has gone off.
7. the SRS light will blink 2 times indicating the memory is reset.
8. Turn the ignition switch to off and wait for 10 seconds.

Also found this at the same site.

Code 5-2 = internal failure of SRS control unit refer to TSB 97-002

Now to read.

In my shop manual, I only see a code 5-1.

I have never messed with the SRS system in my car. I think that the SRS light turning on will disable the air bags.

You can also check for some bad fuses. The shop manual that I downloaded from the spoon link I posted in online manuals thread in the DIY section shows that the SRS control unit is powered by several fuses (#1, 2, and 3). The electrical section in that pdf will show you what fuses match 1, 2, and 3.

Look at the warranty booklets. I think back in 1995 Honda had a "lifetime" warranty on seatbelts & airbags.

Thanks guys for your responses. I will check the fuses but I am also checking to see if Honda will make good on replacing the SRS Unit. There is a recall for this item but the previous owner had the recall done already. The dealer said no already but I will contact Honda directly to verify if I have any recourse for an apparent faulty SRS unit. If not then I will find a used SRS unit that has not been in an accident and replace it myself.

Latest Update. The code 52 that the SRS system was throwing necessitated a replacement of the SRS unit. I was fortunate to purchase a new one on eBay for $1 plus 10.99 shipping. I was surprised that no one else bid on it. Anyway, I installed this unit in my car and after plugging everything in, the SRS light was no longer illuminated. After going through all of the procedures that I previously mentioned, I no longer have any more warning lights. By the way, this car had been under a recall for the SRS unit and was replaced by the dealer previously. They were not willing to replace it this time though without me paying for it. I had checked all of the fuses with no problems found so replacement of the unit was the only other alternative.

+1

I have the SRS light on in a new-to-me '96 LX.

This thread at least gives me some place to start. One of the problems is the search function doesn't look for a string as short as "SRS", so it takes a long time to find these threads. A tag like " airbag " in the tags list might help..or maybe if I say airbag in the post enough when someone searches on " airbag light ", it will bring this thread up.

So, over 2 years later after the OP started this, thanks again!
