Default 97 ABS modulator leaking

The ABS modulator on my 97 wagon buzzes then sets the ABS light. Looks like it is leaking, but not sure where. If it is only the little reservoir, is that replaceable without removing the modulator?

The body plugs of the modulator are a known leakage point. I have a TSB on this I can email. Too large at 138K to post directly, so PM your email address and I'll forward. I used this to repair a modulator on a 97 Acura 2.2CL (same as Accord modulator).

Also, the accumulator/reservoir oring is also known to leak. Bleed hydraulic pressure, remove accumulator and replace oring. Use shop manual, but this is not a repair described by manual.

I would clean modulator and attempt to trace where leaks are originating.

What ABS code is being set? This may narrow the repair options.

good luck

Hi TH,
I have not pulled the codes. Does pulling the accumulator pose any difficulties? Does it have to be bled down first or something?

Where are the "body plugs" in this diagram

Can sometimes be the o-rings too.

Great, thanks. Looks like I will remove the modulator and check the plugs and O rings, before I buy a used modulator.

What is "brake assembly fluid"/ referred to in the bulletin?

O, btw, can you post the pages referred to covering pulling the assembly 19-133, and 19-128?

Brake assembly fluid is usually either including a silicone based or synthetic lubricant.

The service manual is available for free download in the DIY thread located at the top of this forum.

Here is the TSB regarding the o-rings:

You need a 10mm flare tube wrench to break the hydraulic connection nuts. If you try w/ an open end 10mm, you will likely round the nuts (bad move!).

good luck

Had to take it to a shop to have it pulled. My shoulder is out. Anyway, they broke the old one, got a used one, but the accumulator cannister is leaking. Is there a way to swap those out? Does it have some kind of pre- charge?
