My 97 Accord recently blew a coolant hose, and overheated. Temporarily fixed the leaking hose, and refilled the system with coolant. 20 miles later so far so good.

Went to the local Honda dealer today and got a new hose, oil filter, and 3 qts AT fluid to change out.

However the engine light remains on. Is there anyway to reset the system or see what codes were thrown without taking it to a shop or auto parts store.

Your 97 has both the OBD II and the blue service connector.

If you don't want to go to get the OBD-II code read at an auto parts store for free, then locate the blue service connector on the passenger side and jump it with a small paper clip or wire to retrieve the trouble code by counting the blinks on the Check Engine Light.

I'll go look for one of the links with the picture of the connector.

 

Take your car to autozone or oreilly they will get the code for you, i believe it is free of charge. Then you can reset it by disconnective your negative battery terminal for about 20mins.

I jumped out the 2 pin connector, turn the key to on and the MIL flashes 7 long times and 3 short.

However looking at the code list, there is no 73.

Am I missing something here, maybe 2 separate codes?

 

Code 73 is misfire detected cylinder 3.

Depending on the time interval of the flashes, if it was 7 by itself then it would be throttle position sensor, 3 by itself would be MAP sensor. -- Did you by chance disconnect the the TPS sensor and MAP sensor and reconnect them? I am not sure for your 97 Accord 4 cylinder; but, on the 98-02 Accord 4 cylinders, you can incorrectly switch the connectors for the TPS and MAP sensors.

 

code 7 is TPS, but if it was a LONG flash that's code 70 (auto-trans stuff).

Code 73 has no extra space between the 7 long & the 3 short.

AutoZone code readers will remove all doubt, you'll probably get P0303 or something like that.

 

I'll just stop by autozone to get the exact codes. Obviously it was a result of the coolant loss and the engine getting hot. My main concern is that there is no major damage to the engine.
