97 Accord - Oil changes
Hello guys
I know this is always debated but I am frugal and have been changing my oil every 5k miles.
I thought this was correct but see a lot of post saying 4k miles.
Is 5k ok?

Wouldn't worry about oil holding up, look at the costs.
Figure how much you spend on oil in a yrs driving, and how much on fuel ($.13/mile for me).
Add in insurance ($XXX.00) and tires ($.01/mile).
Bet if you doubled your oil change costs/yr it wouldn't have any impact
on your total annual driving costs.
I use normal major brand oil (least $ in local stores) and changing @ 3000
(figure oil change costs me < $.01/mile, maybe half that); '93, 223,000.

I use the cheapest oil I can find
The car is not driven hard at all
My girlfriend drives it to and from work
50 miles a day down a 2 lane road at 45 - 55 MPH
Isn't the factory recommended changes 5k miles?

I get mine changed every 3500 miles. Jiffy Lube coupon from the Sunday paper every couple of months...$19.99 Oil & Filter change (Penzoil 5W/30) All other fluids topped off. Can't beat the deal, just check all fluids before you leave, and be sure everything is in place. I believe in frequent oil changes as my 1993 LX has 227,000 miles on it. No leaks, runs excellent, Original engine and trans...

I change mine @ 3000. That is because I stay on the road (I'm military) and want to keep my vehicles fluids ready so I can jump in my 96 and roll out at anytime. If I did only local driving, I would follow the manuals recommendations. I agree with bigpat when it comes to frequent oil changes. I recently replaced my engine (6 months ago) because the previous owner didn't have a clue about maintaining the car. Now that she is in good hands with me, I have over 400,000 miles on tranny (orginal) and 100,000 on engine...hope this helps...

If you are in a area where the temp is 40 - 90 degrees no dusty or hard driving(ie granny driver) you can push it to 7k miles. Other wise 3k miles. You pay for what you get. Cheep part lead to cheep performance, including failure and durability. Filter from Honda but Mobil one from Walmart $30 do it my self and save some cash. Use some brake clean to clean off any oil or live with the smell of burning oil. Be cheep and you might find your self changing an engine. There goes all the savings and some.
